I recently came across some old footage of my daughter and a mustang named Smokey.
When Smokey came to stay with us, he was an 8 year old mustang who had never trusted a human or allowed anyone to halter him. His owner had spent a year trying to earn his trust with no luck, so she brought him to stay with us to see if we could help him.
Smokey was terrified. Snorty. And didn’t even like you entering his pen. But my daughter, 15 at the time, slowly gained his trust. She showed up with patience, kindness and quiet consistency that Smokey responded to. Eventually Smokey allowed her to put the halter on him for the first time!
But the halter wasn’t the real victory.
The real victory was watching a once terrified Mustang choose to trust. And even more special was watching what that journey taught my daughter. Patience , empathy, consistency and earning trust, not demanding it.
Sometimes the best part about working with mustangs isn’t the training victories but rather the connections that change both horse and human.
