WESTERN MAINE GREAT PYRENEES RESCUE is a new foster based dog rescue formed with the intention of finding quality homes for this wonderful breed. While many people are well aware of the plight of homeless and unwanted dogs in the southern US, The Pyrenees suffers additionally in the heat of the south due to the amount of hair that they have. between France and Spain as a Livestock guardian Dog. Th

ey thrive in New England's climate, loving snow and winter much more than summer's heat. Because they were bred to do their job without a lot of human input, they tend to be independent thinkers with a serious demeanor. But they are also gentle dogs who are devoted to their human family and protective when the need arises. WMGPR will rehome Pyrs in need from anywhere, but will focus on bringing dogs north from Mississippi. We are licensed by the state of Maine and will adopt to approved homes in ME and NH. We plan to stay small in the number of dogs we have at one time. This will allow each Pyrenees to have individual attention in a home/farm setting. This will allow the dog to develop the skills it will need to have a successful adoption, and hopefully, a forever home.

Gideon started the day off with a dip in the pool. This guy is still available for adoption, after being returned once thru no fault of his own. No matter how well the meet and greet goes, occasionally you get a resident dog that just says "Nope, I just don't want you to live under the same roof as me"So this shy boy is back here rocking the kinda farm life, and stepping in for Maggie with the new dogs while her foot heals.

Imagine running a rescue in the state capital of Mississippi-a city with no animal control officers or any offical facilities. Chrissy Cheshire of Cheshire Abbey steps up for as many dogs as she can, and she has just stepped up for another Great Pyrenees in need. And Chrissy isn't the only one, many people work hard in Mississippi to make up for the fact that there isn't any sort of a plan in place, and the animals suffer because of it. But I want to thank her for getting this guy off the streets, where he wandered for weeks, visiting with children outside playing. He is, of course, heartworm and elrickia positive, like so many dogs in the South. But, oddly enough, he is neutered, so I want to think that he had a family at some point, but we just don't know.

I do want to thank the doggie groomer that kindly took care of him with a shampoo and a start over haircut. To those that say you should never shave a Great Pyrenees, sometimes you just have to. He's clean now and not matted to the skin, and by the time he is done with heartworm treatment and negative and ready to come to Maine, he will be all grown out. He doesn't have a name yet, Chrissy's nieces have that honor. They loved Buddy dearly, and now they have another Great Pyrenees to fuss on. So stay tuned to find out what this mystery guy's new name will be!

Lucy is in Maine and looking for a home! This girl was an owner surrender in NC because her family was moving. She was described as a dog that lived outside, but she was not a working dog, and she is between 2 and 3 years old. She got several weeks living inside with her foster Colleen, and she has fit into her new inside life up here just fine. She is a very friendly girl who LOVES everyone she meets, dog or human. She is great with cats as well. She has excellent leash manners and loves to ride as well. She would love to go to a home with another dog to hang with. She is spayed, UTD on vaccinations and worming, micro chipped, and on heartworm preventative as well. Her adoption fee is 400.00 . Buddy, who recently came up from Mississippi, headed to Eastern Maine to live with Lisa and her family. Lisa had been patiently waiting for awhile for a mellow dog past the puppy stage, and Buddy fit the bill! WMGPR wishes to thank Chrissy Cheshire of Cheshire Abbey for the months and months of treatments and vet bills to get this good boy on the road to recovery, as he was so neglected. It was well over 6 months before he was able to come to Maine and find his happily ever after. WMGPR wishes you the best, Fluffy Guy !

Lucy had a great first full day in Maine, just marveling at everything. She "checks all the boxes" as they say. She is well mannered around dogs and all sorts of animals, loves Matt the Cat, easy to walk and loves to ride in the car. It doesn't get any better than that !
