Recently, we helped a dog named Leo pass peacefully at home surrounded by the person who loved him most. After his appointment, one of Leo’s neighbors reached out to us because she was so touched by the experience and wanted to pay it forward by helping another family seeking our services. With her permission, we wanted to share her words:

“ A special thank you to Paws at Peace for the respectful and kind care that they gave to my friend and her beloved dog, Leo. Those of us who have had the honor of sharing our life with a pet know the heartbreak when their lives are ending. The grief and sorrow we feel is only surpassed by the joy they have brought to us. Making the decision to euthanize is, in my opinion, the final act of love and having the ability to do so in the comfort of their home is a gift. Wanting to remember and celebrate the life of Leo, please use this small donation to assist another family seeking your service. “

Donations like this are placed into a small fund that we can use to help families who may not otherwise be able to afford at-home euthanasia services, or families who we feel would especially benefit from the comfort of saying goodbye at home. We are incredibly grateful for the kindness and generosity shown in Leo’s memory.

We wanted to share a gentle reminder that at-home euthanasia appointments usually cannot be arranged on an emergency or immediate basis. We understand that scheduling an appointment in advance can be an incredibly difficult and emotional thing to do, and many families hope they will “just know” when the time is right. Unfortunately, because we are often booked ahead and spend extended time with each family, we are not always able to accommodate urgent same-day requests.

One of the most helpful things you can do is begin having conversations with your regular veterinarian about quality of life before your pet is in crisis. Declining quality of life is often gradual, and planning ahead can help avoid stressful situations where your pet may be uncomfortable while waiting for availability.

We also have several resources available on our website about quality of life and the euthanasia process, and we are always happy to email quality-of-life assessment tools to anyone who may find them helpful.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your pets’ lives and stories. ❤️

🐾 Understanding Your Pet’s Pain: The Grimace Scale 🐾

Our pets can’t tell us when something hurts—but their faces often do.

The Feline Grimace Scale (and similar tools in dogs) is a simple, research-backed way veterinarians assess pain by looking at subtle facial changes like:
• Ear position
• Eye squinting
• Tension around the muzzle
• Whisker position
• Head posture

Even subtle changes can signal discomfort. This allows pain to be recognized earlier and managed more effectively—especially in cats, who often hide signs of illness.

At Peaceful Journey At Home, we use tools like the grimace scale to help guide comfort-focused, end-of-life care and ensure pets remain as peaceful as possible.

If you’re noticing changes in your pet’s expression or comfort level and have concerns, we recommend following up with your primary care veterinarian for evaluation and treatment guidance. We are dedicated to hospice and end-of-life services and are always here to support comfort and quality-of-life decisions. 💙

Dr. Jessy recently underwent an MRI. Unfortunately, the MRI confirmed two herniated discs in her neck, and she is currently scheduled for surgery at the end of May. Because of this, she likely will not be able to facilitate appointments until sometime in July.

In addition, Dr. Katy will be unavailable May 20–25.

This means our appointment availability over the next several weeks will be extremely limited, and we may not be able to accommodate all requests during this time. We truly appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding, and kindness while we navigate this.

Thank you all for continuing to trust us with your beloved pets during such important moments. ❤️

✨Availability Update✨

Dr. Jessy had an emergency MRI today due to a neck injury, which revealed two herniated discs. She is unable to facilitate appointments until further notice while we learn more about her condition and determine next steps, including whether surgery will be needed.

This means our scheduling will be more limited than usual for the time being. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thank you all for your continued support and kindness

Last Friday, we lost our cat, Squash.

We found Squash last year after he had been hit by a car. He recovered from that injury and went on to live a life full of comfort, safety, and so much love. While we didn’t have him long, he made an enormous impact in that time. He was incredibly sweet and thrived on affection, always happiest when he was being loved on.

I don’t know why he died. He was seemingly happy, and we found him immediately after he passed. What makes this loss especially hard is that it happened while I was working an ER shift, so I never got the chance to see him again.

Palmer’s went above and beyond in caring for him after his passing, including cremation and preserving his memory with ink prints.

Jessy also made the most beautiful clay and ink paw prints, something I will always be deeply grateful for.

Sharing this here feels especially humbling, given that this page is dedicated to end-of-life care. Squash is a reminder that no matter how prepared we think we are, grief still finds us, and that the way we honor and care for our animals, in life and after, truly matters.
