🐾💙 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: EVERYBODY LOVES ENZO!

Ear infections? Not fun.

A whole veterinary team ready to shower you with love and attention?

Now THAT'S something Enzo can get behind. 😂❤️

This handsome pittie recently visited us with an ear infection, and while his ears weren't feeling their best, Enzo wasn't about to let that ruin his day!

With Dr. Lorenson and Bri on the case, our sweet boy received the treatment he needed, plenty of reassurance, and, of course, a generous helping of love. 🩺💕

And can we talk about that SMILE?!

Because somewhere between getting his ears checked and soaking up all that attention, Enzo decided this whole vet visit thing wasn't so bad after all. 🥹

Enzo, you absolute sweetheart. 💙

We're so happy we could help you feel better, and we hope those ears are feeling much happier very soon!

Now excuse us while we admire that adorable pittie smile one more time. 😭🐾

👻 We’ve been trying to tell management that things around WVC have been getting a little… spooky.

Phones answering themselves. ☎️
Kennel doors mysteriously opening.
Unexplained activity on dental and Whole Body X-ray computers. 🩻
And lately, we can’t even finish our SOAP notes without feeling like someone is watching us… 👀

Management says there’s probably a reasonable explanation.

We’re starting to disagree. 👻🐾

Although, if the ghosts are willing to answer phones and help with radiographs…

we’re not exactly rushing to get rid of them. 😂

Happy Spooky Season Friends!

👀 “This probably sounds weird, but…”

Stop right there.

Because some of the BEST information pet owners give us starts with that exact sentence!

You live with your pet every day. You know their routines, their quirks, and exactly how long you're allowed to be 3 minutes late serving breakfast before management gets involved.

Here are 7 weird little things your vet actually wants to hear about:

1️⃣ “She stopped jumping onto the bed.”
Even if she's walking normally. Hesitating before stairs, furniture, the car, or favorite perches can sometimes be an early clue that movement is uncomfortable.

2️⃣ “He's eating… just differently.”
Dropping food, chewing on one side, taking longer to finish, walking away and coming back, suddenly preferring softer food—those details matter.

3️⃣ “She's been following me EVERYWHERE lately.”
We talk about pets hiding when they don't feel well, but a change in the opposite direction matters too. Suddenly becoming unusually clingy or restless is still a behavior change.

4️⃣ “He's sleeping in a weird spot.”
Your couch potato abandoning THE couch?! 👀
One random nap isn't necessarily meaningful—but consistently choosing unusual places can be worth mentioning, especially with other changes.

5️⃣ “She's still drinking… but I'm filling the bowl more.”
You don't need to know the exact number of ounces. If that water bowl suddenly needs refilling noticeably more often—or barely at all—we want to know.

6️⃣ “He does this weird thing at home, but NEVER here.”
TAKE. A. VIDEO. 📱👏
Limping, coughing, strange breathing sounds, tremors, unusual movements, episodes of odd behavior—if it's safe to record, a video can give your veterinary team valuable information we may never get to see during the appointment.

7️⃣ “I can't explain it. She's just… not herself.”

Yep. That counts.
You don't need a diagnosis before you call us. That's our part.

Your part is knowing your pet.

🙏🐶 POV: your dog is manifesting the perfect vet clinic…

One where they listen to the humans AND the pets.

Where an annual exam isn't “just an annual,” because those ears, heart, lungs, teeth, eyes—and all those little details—still deserve a thorough look. 🩺❤️

And maybe most importantly?

A place where the people caring for your pet genuinely love animals.

Buck decided to put his request out into the universe…

✨ A veterinarian who takes the time to listen
✨ Thorough care, even when everything seems perfectly fine
✨ Plenty of patience
✨ And, obviously, an unreasonable amount of pets and attention

Then Dr. Murphy walked in. 😂💙

Because your pets aren't just another appointment on our schedule. We know how much they mean to you—and we want them to feel that love from us, too.

Judging by Buck's face during those post-exam cuddles…

Manifestation successful. 🐶✨

Yes we ARE accepting new patients! We do typically booked about a month out for regular appoinments. We do offer Same Day sick appointments- they are a first call, first serve basis: For situations that require more immediate attention we always recommend going to an Emergency hospital (Pieper memorial, VEG, OSVS) or visiting our friends over at Petmedic Urgent care

🌧️🐶 If your dog has looked outside today and thought, “Wow… free drinks everywhere!” — we need to talk.

Because while every puddle might look like Mother Nature just installed a complimentary outdoor water bar…

we need to talk about Lepto. 👀

Leptospirosis—or Lepto—is a bacterial disease that can affect animals and people. Infected wildlife and rodents can shed the bacteria in their urine, contaminating water and soil.

And all this wet weather?

That matters.

Leptospira bacteria can survive in contaminated water or soil, and exposure risk can increase following heavy rainfall and flooding.

Which means the dog who thinks:

💧 Puddle? Drink it.
💧 Mud? Run through it.
💧 Standing water? Obviously a private swimming pool.

…may be exposing themselves to more than just a very annoyed human holding a towel at the back door. 😭

And here's an important misconception:

Lepto isn't only something “outdoorsy dogs” need to worry about.

Dogs can encounter contaminated environments whether they live in the country, suburbs, or city.

Leptospirosis can become very serious and may cause kidney or liver damage and other severe illness.

The good news? ❤️

There is a vaccine available for dogs.

So while Rhode Island continues its current impression of an aquarium, this is a pretty great time to check your dog's vaccine history and ask your veterinarian about leptospirosis protection.

And until the skies decide we've had enough…

Maybe don't let them drink the mystery puddle. 😂🌧️🐾

Your dog: But it's artisanal rainwater.

Us: NO.

❤️🐾 Okay… our last post was a little heavy. So today, we’re going back to our roots.

And by roots, we mean…

PUPPY. 😂😭

Everyone meet Moose, a 16-week-old Labrador Retriever who is starting life off on the right paw—with an amazing family, plenty of love, and a visit to his new friends at Wickford. 💙

Moose stopped in to see us for some important puppy business, including his rabies vaccine (a VERY important milestone!) and his kennel cough/Bordetella vaccine. 💉🐶

Look at him. 😭❤️

These first puppy visits aren't just about vaccines. They're the beginning of a relationship we hope to have for many, many years—and getting to watch these tiny patients grow into beloved family dogs is one of the absolute best parts of what we do.

Moose, we are SO happy to officially welcome you to the Wickford Vet Clinic family. 💙🐾

We can't wait to watch you grow…

Although with a name like Moose, we have a feeling there's going to be a LOT of growing. 😂🫎

💙 This one is a little heavier than our usual posts. But it matters.

September is Su***de Awareness Month.

And while we spend a lot of time on this page showing you the funny moments, the puppy kisses, the kitten cuddles and the patients who make our days brighter, there's another side of veterinary medicine that isn't talked about nearly enough. And sometimes carry those stories home with us.

Our profession is hurting.

But this conversation is bigger than veterinary medicine.

In 2024, 48,824 people in the United States died by su***de.

An estimated 14.3 million adults seriously considered it.

Those aren't just statistics.

They're someone's veterinarian.
Someone's technician.
Someone's coworker.
Someone's friend.
Someone's parent, sibling, partner or child.
And sometimes they're the person standing right beside you who seems completely okay.

We love what we do.

And loving this profession doesn't make someone immune to struggling.

So this month, we're asking for something bigger than likes or shares.

Check on your people.

Ask twice.

Make it normal to say, “I'm not doing okay.”

And when someone trusts you enough to say it, listen.

To our fellow veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists, kennel teams and everyone else who keeps veterinary medicine moving:

You matter outside of what you can do for everyone else.

And to anyone reading this who is struggling—whether you work in veterinary medicine or have never stepped behind a treatment-room door—help is available.

In the United States, you can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

We spend our careers reminding people that asking for help for their animals is an act of love.

Maybe we should extend ourselves the same kindness. 💙

👀 EXCUSE ME… you’ve been WHERE?! WITH WHO?!

Now, for the record, we are NOT saying you can’t visit other veterinary clinics. 😂

Lottie, however… is absolutely saying that.

One of our favorite Golden girls spent the day popping her head through windows and doorways like a tiny furry detective who had just uncovered the betrayal of the century. 🔎🐶

“Another clinic?”

👀 Interesting.

“And there were OTHER dogs there?”

👀👀 Go on.

We tried explaining that there are lots of wonderful veterinary teams out there and everyone should find the place that feels right for their family.

Lottie heard us.

Lottie understands.

Lottie would still like names. 😂

Because apparently being part of the Wickford family comes with one extremely fluffy neighborhood watch officer.

Detective skills: 12/10 🔎
Love for Wickford Vet Clinic: 12 million/10 💙
Ability to mind her own business: still under investigation. 👀

We love you, Lottie. Never change. 😂💛

🎶 Hey! There they goooo… sort of. 😂🐱🐱

Meet "Smoke & Rue", two tiny 4-week-old rescue kittens who recently learned two very important things at Wickford:

1. Being handled by humans can actually be pretty fun. ❤️
2. Staying on beat is… a skill they have not yet unlocked. 😭

Listen, they TRIED.

Were the moves synchronized? Absolutely not.

Did they understand the assignment? Debatable.

Did they look ridiculously adorable doing it?

WITHOUT QUESTION. 😂👏

But underneath all those tiny paws and questionable dance moves, there was actually something pretty important happening.

At this age, positive experiences with gentle handling can help kittens learn that people, touch, new experiences, and being picked up don't have to be scary. 🥹

So while Smoke & Rue thought they were simply launching their dancing careers, we were sneaking in a little positive socialization along the way. 💙

Handled gently ✔️
Lots of love ✔️
New experience ✔️
Positive human interaction ✔️
Choreography…

We'll circle back to that one. 😂

For two little rescue babies figuring out this whole big world, we'd say they did a pretty fantastic job.

10/10 for effort.
14/10 for cuteness.
2/10 for staying on beat.
🐱🎶❤️

🎃🌽 Not everything dangerous to your dog is poisonous.

Fall is coming, which means pumpkins are appearing on porches, decorative gourds are finding their way onto tables, and corn on the cob is making its final appearances at cookouts.

And to your dog?

Apparently, we’ve decorated the entire house with snacks. 😭😂

🌽 CORN COBS
Your dog may think that leftover cob is the world's greatest chew toy. Unfortunately, chunks of corn cob aren't easily digested and can become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract, creating an obstruction that may require surgery to remove.

🎃 PUMPKINS
Plain, fresh pumpkin can absolutely have a place in some pets’ diets—but the pumpkin sitting on your porch for days or weeks is a different story. Once it begins to rot or grow mold, it’s no longer something we want curious pets helping themselves to.

🍂 DECORATIVE GOURDS
That cute little fall display sitting at dog-nose height? 👀 Pieces that are swallowed can potentially become foreign material in the GI tract, particularly when a pet bites off or swallows something too large to pass normally.

Signs of a possible obstruction can include:

🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Abdominal discomfort
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Straining or changes in bowel movements

And this is one of those times when “let’s wait and see if it passes” isn't always the safest plan.

So go ahead. Decorate the porch. Carve the pumpkins. Enjoy that last corn on the cob.

Just remember that you may be sharing your home with someone whose entire decision-making process is:

“Can I fit it in my mouth?”

If the answer is yes…

They will certainly consider it. 😂🐶🎃
