New in the live department: the smokey oak millipede.

It’s a slow-moving, easygoing millipede native to the U.S. that grows to about four inches. It’s also a working part of a bioactive enclosure. Smokey oaks eat decaying leaves and wood, tunnel through the substrate, and leave behind waste that feeds the plants. That keeps the soil loose, breaks down what would otherwise rot, and means less cleanup for you.

They live well alongside isopods and springtails. They don’t bite and aren’t venomous, but like most millipedes they can release a defensive fluid when startled, so wash your hands after handling.

We now carry what you need to build a bioactive setup: enclosures, live plants, isopods, and now millipedes. Whether it’s a home for a reptile or a small self-contained habitat for the invertebrates themselves, our team can help you put one together. Stop by and take a look.
