📜🐾 A Historic Recognition for Veterinary Technicians in Connecticut 🐾📜

Several weeks ago, Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine wrote to Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont's office to highlight a profession that is often overlooked, yet absolutely essential to veterinary medicine: the Veterinary Technician.

In our letter, we shared the education, skill, compassion, and dedication required to become a veterinary technician. We spoke about the advanced medical procedures they perform, the exceptional care they provide to patients and clients, and the personal sacrifices they make every day in service to animals and their families.

We are honored to share that the Office of Governor Ned Lamont responded with an official proclamation declaring this week Veterinary Technician Week in the State of Connecticut.

While Veterinary Technician Week is recognized annually by the NAVTA and celebrated throughout the veterinary profession, receiving recognition at the state level is truly meaningful. It shines a spotlight on the critical role the veterinary technician profession has in animal healthcare and acknowledges the impact they have on patients, clients, and veterinary teams every day.

To our incredible technicians at Central Hospital, thank you for your knowledge, compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

And to all veterinary technicians across Connecticut, this recognition is for you, too. You are all our colleagues. Together, we celebrate your hard work, dedication, and the immeasurable difference you make in the lives of animals and the people who love them.

The NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians�in America) announced that this year’s theme is:
“Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine.”

Our Veterinary Technicians are the soul of our hospitals. They combine advanced medical training with endless compassion, providing expert care to every patient and supporting our doctors, clients, and community in countless ways.

Although not all of our technicians from North Haven and Guilford are pictured here, we are still celebrating every single one of them and their dedication this week and year-round!

Celebrating a New Achievement at Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine!
We are proud to share that our Learning & Development Director Brynn Holt, CVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) has officially earned her RECOVER Instructor Certification.

This accomplishment requires a multi-step process that reflects true dedication to emergency medicine training. To become an instructor, Brynn first completed and maintained her BLS and ALS RECOVER Rescuer Certifications, which must be renewed every two years. She then passed the Instructor Assessment Exam and was accepted into the Instructor Course, where she completed the full evaluation and earned her certification.

With this certification, Brynn can now teach the RECOVER Rescuer Course and certify other professionals as official RECOVER Rescuers. Our Medical Director, Dr. Harley, shared how meaningful this is for the hospital, stating, “It is important to us as a hospital to follow RECOVER guidelines. Having Brynn achieve instructor certification is an asset for all of us! Thank you, Brynn!”

DOCTOR SPOTLIGHT!
Dr. Philip Cohen brings a thoughtful, problem‑solving approach to every patient he sees. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Vermont before completing his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he completed a rotating medicine and surgery internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York, followed by a neurology and neurosurgery residency at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.

He has a strong interest in spinal surgery and in diagnosing and treating the underlying causes of seizures. Dr. Cohen enjoys the challenge of complex medical cases and is dedicated to creating clear, individualized treatment plans that support both pets and their families.

Outside the hospital, he spends most of his time with his kids and takes any opportunity to watch or play sports.

Celebrating a Major Achievement at Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine!

We are proud to share that Lisa Hauser, BS, AS, CVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) has officially earned her Veterinary Technician Specialist credential (VTS) in Anesthesia and Analgesia. This is one of the highest levels of certification a veterinary technician can achieve and represents advanced expertise in anesthesia, patient monitoring, and pain management.

Becoming a VTS requires completing an extensive year-long application process that includes multiple case logs, years of direct study and work in the specialized area, submitting detailed case reports, meeting strict continuing education requirements, and passing a rigorous national specialty exam. Only a small number of technicians nationwide achieve this level of credentialing each year to become a member of their academy.

Lisa has been part of the veterinary field since 1997 and joined our team in 2019. She is known for her commitment to safe, high-quality anesthesia care and for being a trusted mentor to staff across our Guilford campus. Her dedication makes a meaningful difference for our patients every day.

DOCTOR SPOTLIGHT!
Dr. Andrea Brodeur grew up in Massachusetts and has built her career around providing thoughtful, skilled care to pets in their most critical moments. She completed her undergraduate degree at Vassar College and earned her veterinary degree from Tufts University. After vet school, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, Connecticut, followed by a three year emergency and critical care residency at Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey.

Her clinical interests include brachycephalic airway emergencies, wound care, and intoxications, and she is known for her calm, steady approach during high pressure situations. Dr. Brodeur enjoys helping families navigate urgent and complex medical issues with clarity and compassion. It is that care and compassion that drove Dr. Brodeur in starting our Palliative Care & Hospice Service, where she helps families during the most stressful and emotional points of being a pet parent.

DOCTOR SPOTLIGHT!
Dr. Jacqueline Canny brings a strong foundation in veterinary medicine spanning back from when she had her first job in a general practice at the age of 16. She earned her undergraduate degree in wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, then spent several years working in Texas at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, conducting field research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and supporting veterinary teams as an assistant in hospitals across Long Island and Somerville. She later completed a post‑baccalaureate program in pre‑health studies at Stony Brook University.

She graduated from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021, where she discovered her love for working with critically ill and hospitalized patients through her time in the small animal intensive care unit. That interest guided her into an internship in Syracuse before she joined the Central Hospital team in 2022.

Today, Dr. Canny cares for patients in our ICU and supports our emergency service, providing steady, compassionate care to pets who need close monitoring and advanced medical attention. She is committed to helping families through stressful moments with clear communication and thoughtful guidance.
