My name is Andrea Logan and I have been helping dogs and their people my whole life. How can Lead Dog help you?

• I will help you understand your dog’s behavioral issues and help you find the right training style for you and your dog.

• I will help you build a better bond with your dog.

• I will coach you on how to be the leader your dog NEEDS you to be – a kind, confident, consistent and calm leader.

• We’ll make a practical plan for you to have the harmonious relationship with your dog you’ve always wanted. I offer a courtesy phone call to see if I can help you. I have been in animal welfare for over 20 years, helped rehabilitate challenging foster dogs, and helped friends, family and pet owners in the community with their dogs for some time. I have worked with several professional dog trainers of various methods and immersed myself in all things dog: taking courses for dog trainers, reading many dog training and behavior articles and books, watching videos. My personal dogs have been through all levels of obedience, and have participated in agility, nose work, rally and barn hunt. Our current dog, Luke, has been in training continually for his entire first year with us, and will continue for the foreseeable future. I have experience with positive training, balanced training, leadership, dog sports and the way your energy effects your life with your dog. The current training and dog behavior climate is at best confusing for dog parents, and filled with judgement and even shaming at worst. You can easily waste time and money going down the road with the wrong training style. Worse yet, it can leave you frustrated and damage your relationship with your dog. Maybe it already has. I can help you sort through the options, navigate resources and come up with a detailed holistic plan to build the relationship with your dog you have always wanted. Fostering is a huge responsibility and the weight of it can be very hard.

I’ve never been willing to let my fosters go too far away. They HAVE to be able to come back to me if it doesn’t work out. It would break my heart if they were given away or dumped at a shelter.

So please respect rescue and shelter policies about not shipping dogs to other states for adoption. It is for the dogs continued safety and happiness.

Things you can do to help your dog on Halloween:

1. Work on door manners. No darting out when the door opens. Keep a leash on to practice.

2. Give them a safe place away from the door and trick or treaters with something to chew on. Use a crate or baby gate.

3. Watch them around decorations and desensitize them to those scary yard skeletons! Walk past with confidence - your energy helps your dog to not react.

Is your dog reactive to other dogs?

The first goal should always be neutrality.

Your dog doesn't have to LIKE other dogs, but they should be neutral and engaged with you.

Some dogs are literally built to see other dogs as threats, some are scared and some are frustrated.

Your dog doesn't necessarily need doggy friends, they have you.

So make a point of understanding your dog and get some help to work on that neutrality that will make both of you much happier.

If we put aside the positive only force free training, and the balanced training and the compulsive - what do we really need?

We have made a contract with another species when we adopt a dog. It is up to us to learn how to have a good relationship and to meet their needs.

Relationship trumps all.

Let me tell you a story about my dog, Chobe.

The other day we were on a hike and I tripped over a large tree root.

I WENT DOWN. So much so that the wind was knocked out of me.

Now, about 40 feet away there was a deer. Chobe has a very high prey drive and is obsessed with elk and deer.

In that moment, I couldn't ask him to stay - I couldn't talk - I could barely breathe.

But what happened next was truly beautiful. Chobe lay down next to me and waited.

That is not training; that is relationship. That is a dog who is devoted to his person above all else.

It is my hope for you that if you live with these special creatures, you make the effort to understand them and build that relationship.

What IS balanced training?

It can mean many things. This is what it means to me.

1. Use positive reinforcement to teach new things, and redirect when appropriate. REWARD.

2. Use interruptions when the dog isn't responding OR is doing something unsafe or even dangerous. ACCOUNTABILITY. Corrections are calm and matter of fact never stern or emotional.

Dogs who ONLY receive positive reinforcement often lack boundaries. They are confused and only getting one piece of the picture.

What if your supervisor never told you you were doing the wrong thing and you just kept guessing?

Boundaries and clarity are kind. Dogs who have structure and rules - with consistent coaching both positive and balanced - are happier. And so are their owners.

It is not about the tools - it is about the communication.

I see a lot of owners making this mistake on their walks.

Most of you walk your dog most days.

Very few are actually training on those walks. You are missing out on a great opportunity.

So put some structure in. Work on your obedience for about 50% of the time. This could be loose leash walking, cues like Touch or even recall while on leash. Stop and give your dog some affection.

The rest of the time you release your dog to go sniff with OK or Free.

And finally if you are able to use a long leash it can be game changing.

Now you've taken the walk to the next level and bonded with your dog and included mental stimulation as well.
