PSA on Rabbitry Integrity and Breeder Etiquette

We love supporting our fellow breeders. However, a couple of recent situations have made it necessary to clarify our policies and expectations regarding our rabbits.

If you tell us you want to start breeding, we will happily select brood quality animals to set you up for success. Buying animals under false pretenses hurts your program as well as ours. Please be honest about your goals so we can provide you with the right stock to build your foundation.

Pedigree affixes are not optional. Every rabbit born here carries our prefix on their pedigree (e.g. SR's Blackjack). This affix represents our hard work, genetics, and reputation.
Removing or altering the "SR's" prefix is a major breach of breeder etiquette. Renaming our rabbits to present them as your own on your rabbitry page or their pedigrees is unacceptable. That goes for anyone's program. Doing things like that will quickly close any doors open to you.

Moving forward, anyone caught altering our pedigrees or rebranding our stock will be banned from acquiring more from us in future. Thank you to all of our amazing followers who continue to respect our hard work and the integrity of the community 💕

I've gotten a lot of messages leading to this post, I want to explain what's involved in Vienna programs because some folks seem to think we are short-order bunny cooks in the build-a-bunny workshop. We get people asking for a bunny that is "x & y color with blue eyes." Buckle Up!

If you make a harlequin × non-harlequin pairing, you will likely not get a clean harlequin pattern right away. At best, you get partial expression, carriers, or mismarked offspring depending on what the non-harlequin carries. To re-establish consistent harlequin expression, you typically have to breed those offspring back into proven harlequin lines over multiple generations while selecting for correct pattern and type.

Now you have to add Vienna into the program. That's where your white markings and blue eyes come from. Crossing Vienna in also requires several generations before it consistently appears in the line. This produces rabbits that may show white markings (VM), be hidden carriers (VC), or occasionally have blue eyes if the right combination lands. Most will not be blue-eyed harlequin. Even when both parents carry the gene, it’s still a matter of chance with each litter. You may get blue eyes, or you may not, even from the same pairing.

Now factor in genetic health, type, and viability. Selecting simultaneously for multiple traits (color, coat, structure, temperament) significantly narrows your options. Achieving blue-eyed kits requires multi-generational pairing and selective retention. It is a program that takes years, not a single breeding decision. Keep in mind- Dwarf breeds continue refining in head, bone, and overall finish well beyond initial maturity, often not fully reaching their final adult type until ~1.5 years. So when we say "generations," we mean a long time.

Now before your jaw drops at the price points in someone's breeding program, read this again. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. 💖
