The “place” command is an important foundation in dog training because it teaches dogs to calmly remain in a specific location until they are given permission to leave. This command helps build impulse control, focus, patience, and confidence, while also giving the dog a clear expectation of what behavior is appropriate. “Place” can be especially useful in a daycare or boarding environment because it can help dogs settle down after play, wait calmly during transitions, and maintain personal space when staff are moving around the facility. It can also be helpful at home when guests arrive, during mealtimes, or anytime a dog needs to relax instead of becoming overly excited. Most importantly, teaching “place” gives dogs a reliable behavior they can fall back on when they are overstimulated, making it a valuable tool for creating safer, calmer, and more manageable environments.

Here at FidoPlay we understand that reading and understanding dog body language is one of the most important skills for anyone working in a doggy daycare. We also encourage pet parents to learn as well. Because dogs communicate primarily through their body language rather than words, recognizing subtle signs of stress, fear, excitement, discomfort, or playfulness allows staff to respond appropriately before a situation escalates. By paying attention to a dog’s posture, tail position, ear placement, facial expressions, eye contact, and overall movement, staff can make safer decisions about group play, introductions, and handling. This helps prevent conflicts, reduces stress for the dogs, and creates a more positive daycare experience. Understanding canine body language also builds trust between dogs and caregivers, improves the quality of care, and ensures that every dog is handled with confidence, patience, and respect. A well-trained team that can accurately read canine communication is essential for maintaining a safe, happy, and successful daycare environment for both dogs and staff.
