The silence was deafening last night as we learned of the passing of Chris Haverly — our Hero Haverly. Nobody could have imagined that yesterday’s Wednesday "Great Escape" would be his last. On his way back from freeing a car full of dogs and cats from overcrowded Southwest shelters, Chris was taken from us far too soon.

Chris lived and breathed rescue. Every hour, every mile, every ounce of energy he had went to saving lives — trapping dogs no one else could catch, delivering food to families in need, networking animals until a miracle appeared, and driving 7+ hours at a time to guarantee a second chance. He did it all quietly, selflessly, and purely on donations, never asking for anything in return.

Every Wednesday. Most Saturdays. And countless days in between — Chris showed up. And yesterday, he showed up one last time.

Chris, your shoes can never be filled — but your legacy will never fade. In your honor, we will keep going. We will keep rescuing. We will keep fighting for the ones who don’t have a voice. Every Great Escape from here on carries your name, your heart, and your unwavering belief that every life is worth saving.

We love you. Thank you for every life you saved, every freedom ride you gave, and every soul you carried to safety.

💛 Update: Aloka's Surgery Today
We want to inform everyone that our beloved Aloka the Peace Dog will be undergoing surgery today for an injury on one of his legs.

The veterinary team has advised us that following the surgery, Aloka will begin a careful and gradual recovery process. He will be able to walk for up to 10 minutes at a time, a maximum of 6 times per day for the first week. After each week, we will be able to gradually increase his walking time as his healing progresses.

We are deeply grateful for the excellent veterinary care Aloka is receiving, and we are confident that with proper rest and treatment, he will recover well.

Aloka has walked alongside the venerable monks, bringing joy and inspiration to so many hearts. Now it is time for him to rest, heal, and regain his strength. We will take great care of him every step of the way.

We will continue to keep you updated on his recovery progress.

If you are in the Hampton Roads/Peninsula area and would like to join please follow these steps.

3. I’ll send you the regulations to transporting and the instructions to the transport threads

4. We ask that you do at least one transport/rescue a month to stay on the threads.
