Some of our shelter residents have been waiting far too long for someone to walk through our doors and say, “That’s my dog.” 🐾

They’ve watched other animals find their families while they wait patiently for their turn. We're hoping this is the week their forever family finally finds them.

‼ In honor of this month's Clear the Shelters initiative, adoption fees for our longest residents have been reduced to just $60 through the end of August! 🎉

Stop by and meet them. Your new best friend might have been here all this time, and you didn't even know it. 🐶🐱

They’ve waited long enough. 💛

⚠ We're not going to sugar coat it...a few of our new arrivals came to us needing more medical care than we anticipated. 🤒🤕

Over the coming days, our veterinary and shelter teams will be working around the clock to provide testing, treatments, clean and comfortable spaces, and plenty of TLC. 🐾

Preventing the spread of any illnesses is a top priority, meaning we'll be burning through supplies at a higher rate than normal.

If you can help us with the everyday essentials our team will be going through quickest, we would be so appreciative!

🧤 PPE Suits & Gloves
💩 Disposable & Washable Puppy Pads
🥣 Metal Feeding Bowls
🍼 Puppy Food

If you’d like to help, our Amazon Wishlist is available here: https://a.co/04WArgmN

And of course, we always appreciate monetary donations to help with prescription medications and other things individuals may not be able to purchase themselves: https://norfolkspca.com/donate/

Every item purchased directly supports the animals currently in our care and helps our team give them the best possible chance at getting healthy and finding their way home. 🐶🐱

Thank you for continuing to show up for the animals who need us most. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.

🎉👏🏼🩵 Our community adopted a staggering SEVENTY-NINE animals over the last two weeks.

We're so grateful for each and every one of you who chose to open your homes through adoption.

Because of you, this weekend we were able to take in sixty-four animals that were running out of time to find their second chance at other area shelters. Because of you, they will be safe here until the right person comes along for them.

The cycle may be never ending, but we're fortunate to have the space and the heart to keep going. ❤️

As with any group intake, some of these new faces have unanticipated medical needs. Some will need more than others, but we can't do it without you.

If you're able, please consider donating to support their care until their future families arrive: https://norfolkspca.com/donate 🙏🏽

🚨 64 LIVES. 64 SECOND CHANCES. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.🐾❤️

In a short amount of time, 64 cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens have come through our doors from our local city shelter and three other rescue organizations.

Sixty-four.

Some arrived needing vaccinations and microchips.
Some need medications and additional veterinary care.
Some still need to be spayed or neutered before they can go home.
And every single one of them needs food, shelter, medical care, love and eventually, a family to call their own.

When another shelter or rescue reaches out and says, “Can you help?” we want to be able to say YES.

But saying yes to 64 animals comes with a very real cost.

Our team is working tirelessly behind the scenes examining, vaccinating, medicating, cleaning, feeding, comforting, socializing, scheduling surgeries, completing surgeries, and doing everything necessary to prepare these animals for adoption.

Now, we're asking our community to be part of their story.❤️

Whether it's $5, $10, $25, $100 or more every donation helps us provide the care these 64 animals need while they wait for what's next.

🐾 64 animals are counting on all of us.

Please consider making a donation today and sharing this post. Even if you can't give, a share may put one of these animals in front of the person they've been waiting for.

Because right now they may be one of 64…
but to the family who adopts them, they'll be one in a million.❤️🏡

🎥✨ Check out our girl Ophelia, making her television debut on The Hampton Roads Show this morning!

This vintage beauty is a 10-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix who is as friendly as can be. She had a great time meeting all the staff at WAVY TV 10, soaking up all the extra love and pets.

Ophelia was originally transferred in to us from PETA back in 2018, and we were elated when she was quickly selected for adoption. Last month, just shy of 8 years later, we received a call from a shelter in Richmond to let us know she had been surrendered to them. 😭 As is the case with all of our animals, we immediately made arrangements to transfer her back to us.

While we're honored to care for her a second time around, we desperately want this time to be forever. If you can be a soft place to land for this sweet girl entering her golden era, please come meet her at 916 Ballentine Blvd between 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

Her adoption fee is discounted to $60 now through the end of the month!

💔 4.5 YEARS AGO, HE WAS A PUPPY IN OUR ARMS. TODAY, HE'S BACK IN OUR CARE.

Look at these two pictures.

One is a young puppy who found a family and a home.

The other is the same dog, 4.5 years later, weighing 93 pounds, frightened and confused in a shelter kennel.

Today, we transferred him back into our care after his family moved and he was surrendered to another local shelter. We try not to judge or bash anyone making this decision. Life circumstances can change, and we will always be grateful to other shelters for helping animals when they need us.

But we would be lying if we said this didn't break our hearts.

Because to him, none of that makes sense.

He doesn't understand moving.
He doesn't understand shelters.
He doesn't understand why the life he knew for 4.5 years suddenly disappeared.

Right now, he is extremely scared and nervous. He is trying to process an entirely new environment, unfamiliar smells, unfamiliar people and a routine he has never known.

And somewhere inside that scared 93-pound body is the same puppy from that first picture. ❤️

This is the part of rescue that hurts.

Dogs don't understand that circumstances change. They don't understand that sometimes people have to make incredibly difficult decisions. They simply know that their person is gone.

And it is a painful reminder of just how deeply our decisions impact the animals who depend on us.

So today, we're asking for something simple: give him time.

He needs to decompress. He needs to be fully vaccinated. He needs patience, quiet, consistency and people who will allow him to remember that humans can still be trusted.

We anticipate that he may be available for adoption toward the end of the weekend, but there are no promises. His emotional wellbeing comes first, and we will move at his pace.

For now, please send this big guy some love. ❤️Please send a donation in his honor here https://norfolkspca.com/donate/

And if you are considering bringing a dog into your family, please remember: to you, they may be one chapter of your life. To them, you are their whole story.

Let's make sure this next chapter is the one where he finally gets to stay. 🐾
