The Virginia Zoological Park seeks to increase understanding of the world's flora and fauna and to add to the growing body of knowledge about them; to display animals respectfully, in a way that encourages their natural behavior; to conserve animals and their habitats; and to offer opportunities for learning and enjoyment to the public. It will strive to fulfill this mission through education, conservation, research and recreation. The mission of Virginia Zoological Society is to ensure that the Virginia Zoo thrives as a superior zoological institution, reaching its fullest potential to serve people, animals and the environment through programs that emphasize recreation, education and conservation. A hybrid operation

The Virginia Zoo functions as a true hybrid operation through the joint efforts and constant communication between the staffs of the Virginia Zoological Park (VZP) and the Virginia Zoological Society (VZS). VZP staff maintains all animal exhibits and provides animal care and husbandry, maintains the lush grounds and gardens, oversees most building repair and maintenance, and manages the Zoo's ticket booth. VZS staff operates the Zoo's gift shop, restaurant and concessions, educational programs, special events and parties, membership program, marketing and promotions, and fundraising and grant writing through the private sector. The staffs of both organizations work side-by-side on a daily basis and the operation of the two organizations are not only closely related and complementary, but are mostly indistinguishable. Animal Collection

From the plains of Africa to your own backyard, the Virginia Zoo has a world of discovery for you. Open year round, the Virginia Zoo offers family fun, education and excitement for everyone. The Virginia Zoo is home to more than 700 animals representing 150+ species, on 53 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Welcome to the Gardens

Come see the animals in our gardens! Most visitors come to the Virginia Zoo with animals on their minds, but plants are the first things they see. Our gardens set the stage for guests and Zoo residents. We create naturalistic habitats for exotic and native animals. We design, grow and plant themed gardens, and we provide fresh plant treats for our animals. AZA Accredited

Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as your assurance that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things.

Today we raise awareness for our scaliest friends with National Reptile Awareness Day. 🐍 This day exists not only to celebrate reptiles but to promote education, conservation, and appreciation for these animals! Due to harsh stereotypes surrounding reptiles, they are often overlooked in the conversation about animal conservation, but currently more than one in five reptile species are threatened with extinction. The biggest threats to these species are habitat loss and illegal wildlife trading.

YOU can make an impact on reptiles by:
🐒 Visit the Virginia Zoo to learn more about reptiles. Plus, by visiting the Zoo, a portion of your tickets goes toward the Zoo's Conservation Fund!

We are excited to announce that one of our female Eastern mountain bongos, Clover, gave birth to a female offspring on Tuesday, October 13! This calf marks a major milestone for the conservation of this critically endangered species as the first offspring born at the Virginia Zoo since 2020.

Clover and father, Masiko, both joined the Virginia Zoo in 2025 based on a breeding recommendation from the Eastern Bongo Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Kelsie, the Lead Keeper on the African Safari Trail, shared, β€œthe Africa Team is excited to welcome a new bongo calf to our herd! Clover is showing great maternal care in grooming, nursing, and protecting her calf. Our new addition already has her hooves under her and seems to enjoy zooming around her indoor habitat and spending time bonding with mom between naps.”

While mom and baby are adjusting, they may have periodic access to the bongo outdoor habitat. The Virginia Zoo is excited to welcome this little one to the herd and continue contributing to the conservation of this magnificent species!

Did you know that sloths used to be the size of elephants? 😱 πŸ¦₯

Thousands of years ago, large ground sloths roamed the United States before they went extinct around 10,000 years ago. Now, these herbivorous, slow-moving creatures are much smaller and spend their lives in the trees. Tomorrow is International Sloth Day, a time to remember how far this species has come and what we still need to do to protect wild sloth populations today.

The Virginia Zoo is home to three two-toed sloths named Trey, KC, and Honey who currently live behind the scenes but will soon have a public-facing home in our Macon and Joan Brock EdVenture & Exploration Campus opening in 2027! Your support of the Zoo, whether it's through general admission, membership, or donations, allows us to continue conserving sloths and teaching our community about these fascinating animals.

Today marks the start of National Veterinary Technician Week, and we have some amazing ones to celebrate! 🩺 Our two vet techs, Leah and Stephen, bring years of experience and attentive care to their jobs every day.

Head Veterinarian, Dr. Mary Ceccolini, shared this about our vet techs, "Leah and Stephen remind us every day that caring for animals is equal parts science and heart. Their compassion, patience, and quiet strength make our Zoo a better place for every creatureβ€”humans included."

Additionally, Dr. Arin, our Associate Veterinarian says, "Leah and Stephen are truly amazing, and we could not function without their hard work and dedication. Their expertise, compassion, and round-the-clock care make a huge difference in the lives of the animals we care for. Thank you Stephen and Leah!!!"

Thank you Leah and Stephen for everything you do for the animals, our staff, and the entire Zoo! 🫢

How does a turtle prepare for winter? ❄️ With a checkup! 🩺

On Tuesday, our Animal Health Team visited our six species of turtles in Turtle Oasis to ensure they are ready for brumation. Brumation is a period of dormancy which reptiles and amphibians undergo during colder temperatures to help them survive. Unlike hibernation, turtles are not actually asleep during brumation, but rather they become sluggish, their metabolism slows, and they enter a state of torpor, or mental inactivity. They can survive without food and very little oxygen for several months in this state!

In the coming weeks, our Turtle Oasis residents will begin to nestle in mud and leaf piles along the bottom of their ponds. You may still see the turtles on warm, sunny winter days when temperatures are high enough for them to bask in the sun. Brumation can last for 3-5 months, so be sure to stop into Turtle Oasis soon to see our turtles before they burrow for the winter! 🐒

10/09/2026

Every individual animal at the Virginia Zoo shares the important role of connecting our community to species they might otherwise never encounter in the wild, but Animal Ambassadors take this crucial job a step further. Animal Ambassadors are specially trained to engage with the public to help us educate them about wildlife, inspire increased empathy for animals and their habitats, and motivate guests to take conservation action. As a result, our community has formed deep connections with many of our Animal Ambassadors, like Polly the Virginia opossum, through their inspiring stories of overcoming adversity. This makes it especially difficult to share that Polly was compassionately and humanely euthanized on September 18 following a decline in her health.

For the past three and a half years, Polly inspired thousands of guests to reconsider their negative stereotypes and preconceived notions about her species. She also inspired guests, staff, and volunteers to take action to protect native species with the same enthusiasm as for conserving charismatic animals from around the world. We will never forget this immeasurable impact.

Polly was considered geriatric for her species. In the wild, opossums typically live just one to two years. Her extended lifespan is truly a testament to the exemplary care she received throughout her time here at the Zoo.

Please keep our Animal Ambassador keepers, volunteers, and all who loved Polly in your thoughts and allow them space to process this loss.
