⛑️ Outlaw Equine Biosecurity Notice – EHV-1 Outbreak Operations Update
Due to the recent Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak, Outlaw Equine is operating as two completely separate and independent facilities to maintain the highest level of biosecurity and ensure patient safety.
🏥 Facility Separation
Main Hospital – Closed Herd
The main hospital is functioning as a closed herd, including:
• Outlaw Stallion Station & Reproduction Center/ Mare Barn/ Stallion Barn/ Collection Center
• Rehabilitation Center: swimming pool, water walker, walker, cold saltwater chamber, and all other rehab modalities in use for in-house patients (not currently accepting haul in patients)
• Main Clinic Hospital & ICU for non-EHV emergencies such as; colic, trauma, lacerations, and other medical emergencies
😷 Isolation Facility – Across the Street
A fully separate facility for:
• Suspect-positive, exposed, or incoming horses from all over Texas
• Independent staff, barn crew, feed crew, and equipment
• Strict PPE, cleaning, disinfection, and temperature-monitoring protocols
• No commingling with main hospital horses or personnel is permitted
This dual-facility system allows Outlaw Equine to continue care when many equine hospitals are unable to accept EHV-suspect cases.
🦠 Stall Sanitation Protocol
Each stall in the isolation facility is cleaned using:
• High-temperature steam cleaning at over 200°F
• Complete pressure washing of all surfaces
• Veterinary-grade disinfectants
• Documented drying time prior to next patient
This restores each stall to a biosecure state and minimizes environmental infectious load.
🩺 Diagnostic Protocols for Incoming Horses
All horses entering isolation receive:
Testing:
• Rapid stall-side EHV test (approx. 1 hour in house testing)
• Off site lab tested PCR (nasal swab & blood) to TVMDL or IDEXX
• Coordination with TAHC
Medical Intake:
• Full physical exam & neurological evaluation
• Baseline blood work and diagnostics (patient specific)
Recommended Testing Window:
• 2–4 days post-exposure, or 2–5 days if timing is uncertain
• Immediate testing if clinical signs are present
💊 Treatment Protocols
Exposed, asymptomatic horses with negative tests:
• Lysine, Ultimate Oil, Vitamin E & Selenium, probiotics
• Strict temperature monitoring (logged twice daily)
Horses with clinical signs or positive tests:
• Antivirals: Acyclovir or Valacyclovir
• Supportive care: Lysine, Ultimate Oil, Vitamin E & Selenium, electrolytes, IV fluids
• Monitoring & nursing: bladder/rectal care, neurological checks, IV catheters
• NSAIDs & subcutaneous heparin for severe cases
🚑 Off-Site & At-Home Options

• At-home treatment: guided by veterinarian with medications and follow-up instructions
• Optional off-label ivermectin therapy: under veterinary supervision/ recommendation only
📞 Client Requirements & Biosecurity Expectations
• Call ahead, even for emergencies
• Temperature checks upon arrival
• Risk-based rapid testing prior upon entry
