๐Ÿพ Fury & Wrigley are back with us for boarding, and we couldn't be happier to have these two awesome pups staying with us again!

Both Fury and Wrigley are graduates of our Board & Train program, and it's always rewarding to see former students return and show off just how much they've retained. Their obedience, manners, and ability to settle into new environments are a testament to the hard work their owners have put in since graduation.

These two have been doing fantastic, enjoying their stay, getting plenty of exercise, and showing everyone what a well-trained dog can accomplish. We love watching our graduates continue to succeed long after training is complete.

Thank you to their family for trusting us with their care. We are proud to be part of their journey and look forward to many more visits from these handsome boys! ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

Baby Soap is maturing into a confident and outgoing happy girl! We are working on field trips with more environmental stimulus and impulse control. She has shown us additional areas she needs some work on so we are working over those areas then continuing field trips. Her favorite command is "place" and she is enjoying new experiences which we are very happy to see! She is truly such a beautiful girl inside and out!

๐Ÿพ Meet Our New Trainer: Danny ๐Ÿพ

We are excited to welcome Danny to the My Dog Listens team!

Danny has been working with dogs for most of his life. What started as a passion for helping family and friends train their dogs grew into a lifelong commitment to learning everything he could about dog training and behavior.

Over the years, Danny has attended countless dog training seminars, certification courses, and continuing education programs throughout the United States and Canada. He has trained alongside and learned from some of the most respected names in the industry, including Michael Ellis, Martin Deeley, Heather Beck, Von Liche Kennels, Logan Haus Kennels, and many others.

With nearly 25 years of experience training dogs throughout Northern Virginia, Danny has helped thousands of local families build stronger relationships with their dogs. As a long-time member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), he remains committed to continuing his education and bringing the latest training knowledge to the dogs and families he serves.

Danny's specialties include:

๐Ÿ• Obedience Training
๐Ÿ• Marker Training
๐Ÿ• Behavioral Modification
๐Ÿ• Detection & Tracking
๐Ÿ• Diabetic Alert Training

Danny is passionate about helping dogs reach their full potential while teaching owners how to communicate clearly and confidently with their canine companions.

We are thrilled to have Danny join the My Dog Listens family and look forward to the positive impact he will make for our clients and their dogs.

Please join us in welcoming Danny! ๐ŸŽ‰

It was another HOT one today! But that's no excuse to not get outside and get things done! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ We definitely sweat our butts off today even with taking breaks. We have an endless amount of oak trees and when acorns and leaves or sticks from the trees blow down into that area they have to be raked, leaf blown into piles and then picked up by hand. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿซฃ

Its a great feeling of accomplishment when it all looks great afterwards! Mike and I are always tackling whatever needs to be done together. Its always a plus when the kids offer to help too! Sundays are our get stuff done and deep clean days. Even though it can be hard work its one of my favorite day as we feel super accomplished and ready to tackle another week!

We also found a little sneek ๐Ÿ. Not to worry it was harmless. It was relocated to a safer area. We respect all our wildlife and currently have baby owls that are nested right in the woodline also!
๐Ÿฆ‰ ๐Ÿฆ‰ ๐Ÿฆ‰ ๐Ÿ˜ We love living where we are surrounded by nature and appreciate all it has to offer us.

Hoping everyone had a wonderful weekend!

As July approaches, now is a great time to make appointments with your veterinarian and get prepared before the holidays start.
๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ‡
4th of July can be stressful and scary for your pets. Discuss with your veterinarian now while you can still get appointments to get medications filled and have a safe space setup for them. That includes crating them so they dont work themselves up and run to hide etc. Crating your dog in that area now and getting into routine is key so that things aren't "NEW" and it becomes an even more stressful situation. Make it a new normal thing for a week or two!
๐Ÿฉ
Make sure that you snug up flat collars so they cannot slip them and escape. Take out on leash even in fenced yards to be proactive and prevent accidents from happening like losing a dog during celebrations. This can be the day prior and day after still as people set off fireworks. We take extra precautions the full week before, week of and week after even!
๐Ÿถ
When dogs are anxious and nervous its also best to have organic pumpkin pure on hand or pre make chicken and rice or beef and rice if they have a chicken intolerance. This bland diet will help with inflammation and lessen chances for an emergency vet visit due to loose stools and save you some ๐Ÿ’ฐ in the long run. You can also mix it in with their food if you have extra left over and they'll be grateful for a tasty meal! Its a win win ๐Ÿ†.

Want to know the hardest part of training a cute puppy?

The puppy? Usually not.

The hardest part is often the people.

When you're working hard to build focus, confidence, and engagement with a young dog, every stranger who rushes over saying "Can I pet your puppy?!" or worse, reaches down without asking can set training back.

Not every puppy needs to meet every person.

Sometimes we're teaching neutrality. Sometimes we're building confidence. Sometimes we're working through distractions. Sometimes we simply need the puppy's attention on us.

If you see a dog in training, the kindest thing you can do is ask first and respect the answer, even if that answer is "not today."

Mr. Beefy is learning that the world doesn't revolve around saying hello to everyone he meets. That's an important life skill for any well-behaved dog.

๐Ÿพ Please ask before petting.
๐Ÿพ Respect the handler's answer.
๐Ÿพ Help puppies succeed.

Baby Soap has come a long way in just a week and a half! We have been working a lot on confidence building as she was very timid/anxious and sometimes fearful. She is now happily greeting new people and showing off her duration sit on place as well as showing off an advanced command of send away to place where I can point and ask her to place and she runs over to go sit on place and watching me to release her with "Break!!" So she can run to me to get lots of praise and affection.

A good walk can solve a lot.

One of the things we love most about training is helping dogs learn how to simply enjoy being with their people. No pulling, no chaos, no frustration. Just a calm walk, clear communication, and a stronger relationship.

This is Sarah and Copper enjoying some time on the trail after putting in the work. Training isn't just about obedience commands. It's about creating a dog you can confidently take anywhere and enjoy life with.

๐Ÿพ Calm walks
๐Ÿพ Better manners
๐Ÿพ Reliable obedience
๐Ÿพ A stronger bond with your dog

That's what we're after every day.

It is getting warm out there! Be sure to keep walks early in the morning and later evenings to ensure surfaces are cool enough your dog/puppy can safely walk and sit on surfaces. Make sure dogs are well hydrated as well as humans. Potty breaks should not be prolonged in the heat or be unsupervised.

Fun fact: booties for their feet are not safe for prolonged time on. It traps the heat in the feet/webbing where it helps them to regulate temperature and cause overheating. They are great for winter though for the salt on the ground to keep them safe.

Always carry alcohol wipes in case of an emergency. You can wipe in-between the webbing of the pads/toes to cool them down. Do not pour cold water over them. Cool the legs and feet first with room temperature water. Freezing cold water can put them into shock. Bring into a cooler area and seek medical attention asap!

Have a plan! Make a list of at least 3 to 4 emergency hospitals in your area and know the address. This time of year there are countless emergencies and they get booked up fast!

You can also purchase a self cooling place bed/pad to have with you for outings like lunch or dinner out. They roll up and keep your best friend safe, cool and comfortable!

We will be busy with boarding pups this summer as its our busy season. We take every precaution to ensure your dog/puppy is safe with us.

The dog pool and splash pad will be opening up in the evenings for some fun! Its definitely our favorite to watch them play!

Our indoor play area is currently being utilized during the day as well as our treadmill to get some energy and exercise for a few that need it and we are enjoying field trips for pup cups and late evening walks once its cool enough outside.

Photo of Mike with Leo who is one of our regular boarders and with us for 35 days while his family is on travel. We absolutely love Leo! We brought our puppy Mr. Beefy with us too, who immediately made us regret our decisions of giving him ice cream because he stunk us out on the way home where we were all laughing and crying at the same time. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
