Last night we got invited to participate in an incredibly relevant hay clinic. Connie Flores from 17 Hand Equine Nutrition talked in depth about how to manage this year’s hay in Colorado. Over a year of record temperatures and record drought - the situation is dire and many barns are dealing with less than ideal hay for their horses. Connie helped making sense of hay testing (no, you really can’t tell by looking at your hay!) and discussed strategies for making the hay you have do more for your equines.

She will do an online clinic on the same topic in a week, we will post the link closer in time.

I just finished listening to this episode while sitting outside, watching a hazy red sunset & smelling the smoke from any of the numerous fires. I highly recommend listening.

One of the things that stuck out to me -in addition to actually having made a real evacuation plan & put it in writing- is that being up to date on vaccines is part of preparedness. We are a small barn, some really old horses that mostly go out for local trail rides, no one travels for shows, so it is easy to say “I don’t need to vaccinate for this & that, we don’t go to events” - however, if you end up evacuating your horse will likely end up somewhere surrounded by various livestock & horses from all walks of life. This definitely changed how I look at preparation.

📣𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭! You will want to share this one far & wide to help horse owners prepare.

Every year, natural disasters force horse owners to make critical decisions with little warning. In Part 1 of this two-part series, we cover the essential steps you can take now to prepare your horses, property, and support network before an emergency happens.

In this episode, we discuss:
• Why every horse needs permanent identification and up-to-date records
• Building an emergency support network and connecting with local resources before disaster strikes
• Creating an evacuation plan, including destinations, routes, and transportation logistics
• Preparing emergency supplies, feed, medications, and essential paperwork for your horses
• Why practicing trailer loading and emergency procedures can make all the difference when time is limited

Whether your risk is wildfire, flood, hurricane, tornado, derecho, or another natural disaster, the best emergency plan is the one you create before you need it. This episode will give you the tips you need to get that done.

I was planning on being very efficient & focused today, two days of cold snow are the perfect time to lock in & really get work done. As I took a brief (hahaha, that was the plan at least!) break to go out to shake snow off our trees I found a soaking wet, hypothermic dove fledgling. It was unable to fly, breathing was labored & it was barely able to try to hop away from me. I put the bird in a cardboard box, set the box on a heating pad & added a hot water bottle. For the first hour the bird was just still, resting in its dark & warm box, then I saw it move a little. Another hour passed & then the bird started preening itself & I started to feel hopeful. After 4 hours of warm rest it was fully dry & eyes were alert,it was time to release it & hope the parents will find it! I walked out & set the box where I had found the bird - to my great joy it was able to fly up from the ground & land on our roof! ❤️

The use of hay nets and slow feeders as feeding methods in horse management: A semi-systematic review

Background: Hay nets and slow feeders are designed to mimic natural grazing by prolonging forage intake, thereby supporting digestive health and reducing stress-related behaviours. Their design and use, however, can influence effectiveness and may introduce risks.

Aim: This semi-systematic review evaluated the use of hay nets and slow feeders in feeding horses, focusing on their impact on feeding time, behaviour, forage management and health management.
