🐾 Did You Know Dogs Can Develop Breast Cancer Too?
Canine mammary cancer has remarkable similarities to human breast cancer. Dogs share many of the same genes, hormones, molecular pathways, and even tumor characteristics involved in human breast cancer.
Genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 are involved in mammary cancer in both species, while mutations such as PIK3CA have been identified in both canine and human breast tumors. Many canine mammary tumors are also influenced by estrogen and can be classified into molecular subtypes that closely resemble those seen in women.
For years, we’ve been told that spaying early is one of the best ways to prevent mammary cancer in female dogs. But when we look more closely at the evidence, newer research is challenging some long-standing assumptions. Most importantly, quick at -home exams for all female dogs should be a part of their regular body scans.
Understanding what contributes to mammary cancer in dogs helps us better understand the complex relationship between hormones, genetics, environmental exposures, nutrition, and cancer in both species.
In my newest article, I take a closer look at these fascinating connections and what the latest research means for your dog’s health. Link in comments. 🐶💗

☀️ Summer Heat Is Harder on Dogs Than You Think: Think a quick walk mid day is harmless? New research says heat stress can begin in as little as 10 minutes, often with no obvious signs.
It’s not just the air temperature. Hot pavement, direct sun, and humidity all add up to serious strain on your dog’s body, even on days that don’t feel extreme.
Panting doesn’t mean your dog is handling the heat well, and dehydration can happen faster than you’d think.
Before you head out, check the pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Walk early morning and after the sun goes down; stick to shade and grass whenever you can, and keep an eye on the early warning signs, not just the obvious ones.

I hope everyone and their outdoor animals are doing ok with this heat 🥵and smoke/poor air quality🔥!! It is rough out there!! For those of you with asthmatic horses or 🫁horses with heaves, if they can be calm indoors- try keeping them inside with lots of fans blowing to circulate the air and fresh, cool water. If you have water troughs outside, dump and replenish them frequently - the heavy particles from the smoke can come down and land in the water- so not only are your animals breathing in the bad air - they are drinking it also!! Hopefully some rain will come and clear it up some but in the meantime - keep close eye on them and yourself.☺️
