🐶 Housebreaking Your New Puppy: Setting Them Up for Success! 🏡

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but house training takes patience, consistency, and realistic expectations.

✅ When do puppies start learning?
Puppies begin learning from the moment they come home, usually around 8 weeks of age. Most puppies can start understanding house training routines at this age, but complete reliability may not occur until 4-6 months of age, and sometimes longer for small breeds.

✅ Create a Consistent Routine
Puppies thrive on predictability. Take your puppy outside:
• First thing in the morning
• After meals
• After naps
• After play sessions
• Before bedtime
• Every 1-2 hours for young puppies

The more opportunities they have to succeed, the faster they learn.

✅ Reward the Behavior You Want
When your puppy eliminates outside:
🎉 Praise immediately
🎉 Offer a small treat
🎉 Use a consistent phrase such as "Go potty"

Puppies learn best when rewards happen within seconds of the desired behavior.

✅ What About Accidents?
Accidents are part of the learning process.

✔️ If you catch your puppy in the act, calmly interrupt and take them outside immediately.
✔️ If you find an accident later, simply clean it up thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner.

❌ Avoid yelling, rubbing their nose in it, or physical punishment. These methods can create fear and confusion without teaching the desired behavior.

✅ Use Crate Training Wisely
Most puppies naturally avoid soiling their sleeping area. A properly sized crate can be a valuable tool for house training and establishing a routine.

⚠️ When to Seek Professional Advice
Talk with your veterinarian or a qualified trainer if:
• Your puppy is not making progress despite consistent training
• Accidents suddenly increase after previously doing well
• Your puppy is having frequent urination, straining, or other signs of illness
• You are seeing signs of anxiety or fear associated with elimination

Remember: House training is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement will help your puppy learn what is expected and build a strong foundation for a lifetime of good habits.

🐾 Every successful trip outside is a step toward a fully house-trained companion! 🐾

🚨 LOCAL NEWS UPDATE: Keeping Our Cats Safe from "Bobcat Fever" 🚨

You may have seen the recent stories on our local news about Bobcat Fever (Cytauxzoonosis), and we want to share some vital info to help keep your feline family members safe.

Bobcat Fever is a severe, fast-moving illness caused by a parasite carried by wild bobcats and transmitted to domestic cats through tick bites—specifically the Lone Star tick, which is highly active right here in our area right now.

Unlike wild bobcats, our domestic cats have no natural immunity to this parasite. It attacks their organs and blood cells rapidly. A cat can go from perfectly healthy in the morning to critically ill by the evening.

The signs to watch for include:

Severe lethargy or weakness

Sudden high fever

Refusing to eat or drink

A yellow tint to the gums or whites of the eyes (jaundice)

Heavy or labored breathing

🛡️ Prevention is the Best Medicine
Because this disease progresses so quickly and treatment requires intensive care, preventing the tick bite in the first place is absolutely essential. Even indoor cats can be at risk if a tick rides inside on a human or a dog!

We highly recommend protecting your cat with a premium, veterinary-approved preventative. Two excellent, fast-acting choices that we trust to kill ticks before they can transmit disease are:

Revolution Plus: A monthly topical that covers fleas, ticks, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms.

Bravecto for Cats: An extended-duration topical option that provides up to 2 or 12 weeks of continuous flea and tick protection (depending on the specific product type).

Please don't wait for peak tick season to pass. If your cat isn't currently on a preventative, or if you need to restock, give us a call or drop by the clinic to get them protected today.

If your cat ever shows signs of sudden lethargy or fever, contact a veterinarian immediately—every hour counts! 🐾

Thinking about swapping the kibble for a home-cooked meal? 🍳🐶 We love how much our clients care about their pets' nutrition, but before you start chopping, there are some major, hidden risks to consider—and a big reason why commercially formulated food keeps your pet safe.

A massive study by UC Davis looked at 200 home-cooked pet recipes found online and in books. The results were eye-opening: 95% of those recipes failed to meet basic minimum nutrient standards. Feeding an unbalanced recipe can lead to severe deficiencies in Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and zinc—potentially causing immune system issues and serious bone malformations.

This is exactly where the importance of commercial food standards comes in:

What is AAFCO? The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the strict nutritional blueprints for pet food. When you see a commercial diet labeled "complete and balanced," it means it is scientifically proven to contain every single vitamin, mineral, protein, and fat your pet needs to thrive.

The AAFCO Safety Net: Home-cooked meals lack strict formulation. A quality commercial food certified by AAFCO ensures your pet isn't missing vital micronutrients, preventing the devastating deficiency diseases that veterinarians see from well-meaning home cooks.

The "Recipe Drift" Factor: Studies show that even when owners start with a perfect home recipe, 87% stop following it accurately within a year. Commercial manufacturing eliminates human error, ensuring the exact same balanced nutrition in every single bowl.

Grocery Store Inconsistency: The exact nutrient levels in grocery store meats and veggies change from season to season and brand to brand. AAFCO-compliant commercial foods are tested and monitored for consistency, so you always know what your pet is consuming.

Beyond AAFCO (WSAVA Compliance): While AAFCO sets the baseline recipe standards, top-tier commercial diets go even further by meeting WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) guidelines. This means the brand doesn't just pass a basic recipe test—they employ full-time veterinary nutritionists, perform rigorous feeding trials, and practice strict quality control.

The Bottom Line:
Unless you are dealing with a specific end-of-life scenario where a senior pet refuses to eat and just needs a highly palatable meal to maintain quality of life, home cooking is incredibly difficult to do safely. It is also more expensive and time-consuming than buying a high-quality commercial diet.

If you are fully committed to home cooking, you must work directly with a Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist to build a custom recipe and commit to veterinary bloodwork every 4 to 6 months to catch gaps early.

Next time you're picking up pet food, look for that AAFCO statement on the bag—it’s your guarantee that your best friend is getting everything they need! 🐾

🐶 New Puppy? We see puppies of all shapes, sizes and personalities every single day at MVA!

Every breed has traits that make them special… but many also come with breed-related health concerns that owners should know about early. Awareness and preventive care can make a HUGE difference in long-term health and quality of life. ❤️

Here are some common concerns we often discuss with owners of popular breeds and dog types:

🐾 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
• Heart disease (especially mitral valve disease)
• Chronic dental/oral disease

🐾 Dachshund
• IVDD (intervertebral disc disease/back problems)
• Dental disease

🐾 Golden Retriever
• Thyroid disease
• Chronic ear problems

🐾 French Bulldog
• BOAS (breathing difficulties)
• Hemivertebra/spinal abnormalities
• Skin fold and allergy issues

🐾 Labrador Retriever
• Ear infections
• Hip/joint disease

🐾 Goldendoodle and other doodle mixes
• Love eating things they shouldn’t 😅
• Increased risk for gastric foreign bodies/intestinal obstruction

🐾 Great Dane
• Bloat/GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus) — a true emergency

🐾 Bulldog
• Entropion (eyelid rolling inward)
• BOAS/breathing concerns
• Screw tail issues and skin infections

🐾 Shih Tzu
• Dry eye
• Corneal ulcers/eye injuries

🐾 Boxer and bully breeds such as American Pit Bull Terrier
• Mast cell tumors and skin masses

This DOES NOT mean every dog of these breeds will develop these issues. Many live long, healthy lives! The goal is education, early monitoring and prevention whenever possible.

Good nutrition, weight control, routine exams, preventive care, dental care and early intervention go a long way toward keeping these pups healthy and happy. 🐕❤️

As May wraps up, we want to recognize that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Veterinary medicine can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally and mentally exhausting for doctors, technicians, receptionists, assistants, and pet owners alike.

Every day in veterinary medicine we help families through difficult diagnoses, financial concerns, emergencies, end-of-life decisions, long hours, emotional conversations, and the stress of wanting the very best for beloved pets. Emotions can run high on both sides of the exam room.

A little kindness and communication go a long way.

If you do not understand a recommendation, ask questions. We are happy to explain. If you have concerns about costs, treatment plans, medications, or expectations, please speak honestly with your veterinary team before frustrations build. Open conversations help us work together for the best outcome for your pet while reducing stress for everyone involved.

Our veterinary teams care deeply. Sometimes more than people realize.

Thank you for trusting us with your pets, showing patience during busy days, and remembering there are real people behind the scrubs doing their best every single day. ❤️🐾

🚨 Rabies Vaccination in Kentucky: More Than “Just a Shot” 🚨

Rabies is not only deadly… it is almost ALWAYS fatal once symptoms appear. That is why Kentucky law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age and kept current based on the vaccine schedule.

Kentucky law (KRS 258.015) states:
➡️ Dogs, cats, and ferrets MUST be vaccinated against rabies.
➡️ Vaccines must stay current — “past due” is NOT considered protected under the law.

Rabies is still present in Kentucky every year. In 2025 alone, Kentucky wildlife testing confirmed positive rabies cases in bats and skunks across the state.

So what happens if a person is bitten by a dog or cat that is NOT current on rabies vaccination?

⚠️ Kentucky law requires a mandatory 10-day quarantine/observation period for dogs, cats, and ferrets that bite a person.

If the pet is overdue or has no proof of vaccination:
🐾 Animal control and the health department become involved
🐾 Strict quarantine rules apply
🐾 Additional veterinary exams may be required
🐾 In some situations, the animal may be ordered euthanized and tested for rabies if illness develops or exposure risk is high
🐾 The owner may be responsible for costs associated with quarantine, testing, and even human post-exposure treatment in certain cases

And remember:
❗ Rabies testing CANNOT be performed on a live animal.
❗ Testing requires brain tissue after death.

Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine current protects:
❤️ Your pet
❤️ Your family
❤️ Veterinary staff
❤️ The community

If you are unsure whether your pet is current, give us a call and we can help review their records. A quick vaccine appointment is much easier than dealing with a rabies exposure investigation.

🐾 Breeding Basics: What Every Pet Owner Should Know About Dog & Cat Reproduction 🐶🐱

Whether you’re planning a litter or simply curious about how reproduction works in pets, here are some common questions we hear from owners.

♀️ How Often Do Dogs and Cats Come Into Heat?
🐶 Dogs

Most female dogs come into heat about every 6–8 months, although this can vary depending on breed and size.

Small breeds may cycle more often.
Giant breeds may cycle only once every 12 months.

A heat cycle usually lasts 2–3 weeks.

🐱 Cats

Cats are seasonal breeders and typically cycle every 2–3 weeks during the spring, summer, and early fall if they are not bred.

Unlike dogs, cats can continue cycling repeatedly until they become pregnant.

🤰 How Long Is Pregnancy?
🐶 Dogs

Pregnancy lasts about 63 days (roughly 9 weeks).

🐱 Cats

Pregnancy lasts about 63–65 days.

🐾 How Long Does Labor Last?
🐶 Dogs and Cats

Labor can last anywhere from several hours to 24 hours, depending on litter size and the mother.

Once active labor begins:

Puppies or kittens are usually delivered every 30–60 minutes
Breaks of up to 2 hours can be normal if the mother is relaxed and caring for previous babies
🚨 When to Call Your Veterinarian During Labor

Contact your veterinarian immediately if:

Strong contractions continue for 30 minutes with no baby produced
More than 2 hours pass between deliveries and you know more babies are expected
The mother seems weak, painful, or distressed
Green discharge appears before the first baby is born
Labor lasts longer than 24 hours
👀 When Do Puppies and Kittens Open Their Eyes?
Eyes usually open around 10–14 days of age
Vision is still blurry at first and improves over the next several days
🥣 When Should They Start Eating Food?
Puppies and Kittens

Begin offering softened puppy or kitten food around 3–4 weeks of age.

By 6–8 weeks, most are fully weaned and eating on their own.

🍼 Early Care Essentials

Newborn puppies and kittens should:

Nurse within the first few hours of life
Gain weight daily
Stay warm and dry
Be monitored closely for any signs of weakness
✂️ Spaying and Neutering

If you are not planning to breed responsibly, spaying and neutering offer major health and behavioral benefits while helping reduce pet overpopulation.

🐾 Thinking about breeding your pet? It’s a big responsibility that requires careful planning, prenatal care, and close monitoring of mom and babies. We’re happy to answer questions and help ensure the healthiest possible outcome for everyone involved! ❤️🐶🐱
