Congratulations to Tucker! He's our pet of the month. This handsome boy is more than just a pretty face. He loves cuddles, attention, and long walks on the leash. Let's hear it for Tucker the Terrific!

When the smoke hits your eye..... it also hits your pets' airways. Any dogs with a history of chronic cough or collapsing trachea as well as any cats with airway problems, should avoid exposure as much as possible. Keep them in a small room away from the doors which open outside. Air filters are great but best for small areas 20x20 rooms. They lose efficiency quickly in bigger areas

Wisconsin residents, especially those in sensitive groups, are being warned about dangerous air quality conditions as wildfire smoke moves into the state.

BEAT THE HEAT! Another few reminders for the blistering heat.
1)Just don't leave them in the car, PLEASE!
2)Muscles make heat. Big muscles, more active, more heat.
3)Heat gathers quickly but cooling takes time, especially for dogs since they can't sweat.
4)Limit activity and exposure. Active cooling with cold water can be a lifesaver
5)Prevention of heat damage is much better than the treatment for it.

With the warm humid weather, let's take a second to review some pet safety rules.

1)Don't leave them in the car. Even with the window cracked it can get life threatening in a matter of minutes.
2)Minimize prolonged or strenuous activity. Especially in large breed, winter breeds (German Shepherd, Husky, etc), and heavily muscled dogs (looking at you Pitties).
3)Short faces need cool spaces. Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boxer, etc. They are not heat tolerant and extra caution should be taken
4)Do not rely on your dog to choose wisely, they don't. You have to look out for them
5)Active cooling measures such as wetting them down and cool water to drink can help, but with such high humidity their effects can be limited.
6)Thick coats will not protect them. No more than your winter parka will protect you.
7)You are better equipped as a human for handling heat than your dog. They can't sweat significantly, which is a major source of cooling.

Like many of you, we were recently made aware of an employee's actions outside the clinic which were dishonest and unprofessional. Clinic operations and patient care were not affected by those actions. We are still processing this and thank you for your patience and understanding.
