If you have a double-coated dog, this one’s important.

We hear this a lot: “Can we just shave them down? They shed so much.”

And we get it. The shedding is a lot. But shaving a double-coated dog does not stop shedding. It does not help them stay cool in summer. It does not make their life easier.

What it does do is damage the coat.

Double-coated breeds have two layers for a reason. The undercoat insulates. The topcoat protects. When you shave that down, you’re not just removing hair. You’re disrupting a system that regulates their temperature in both directions, warm and cold.

And the coat doesn’t always grow back the same way. The texture changes. The layers stop growing in at the right rate. In some cases it causes post-clipping alopecia, where the coat just... doesn’t come back properly at all.

None of that helps the dog. And it doesn’t fix the shedding either.

What actually helps? Regular baths, a proper blowout, and consistent brushing. That removes the loose undercoat the right way. They’re still going to shed (that’s just what these dogs do) but staying on top of grooming keeps it manageable.

We’ll keep explaining this every time someone asks. Because we really do mean it.

Fall is one of the harder seasons on paws, and most people don't realize it until we're already working through it.

Wet leaves, mud, damp grass, morning frost. Dogs are walking through all of it every day. And everything that comes in on those paws (moisture, debris, dirt) has a way of packing into the fur between the toes and sitting there.

That packed hair traps everything underneath it. Moisture against the skin. Small bits of debris that cause irritation. Sometimes the beginning of mats forming in spots that are hard to see and harder to reach.

By the time a dog comes in for their fall appointment, we're often working through more than it looked like from the outside.

So this time of year, paw care gets extra attention. Not just a nail trim and moving on. Really getting in there, clearing out what's built up, checking the pads and the skin between the toes, and making sure everything underneath is actually clean.

It's a small thing that makes a real difference. Especially for dogs who spend a lot of time outside this season.
