‎A MESSAGE FROM NANCY:

It's time for something new!

It’s been a while since we’ve connected on FB. Many things have changed during the past months. More changes are ahead.

Over the past ten years, it has been my pleasure to connect with this community, and it has been great to see so many long-time friends along the way.
We connected on many things- posts that made you laugh, tips to guide you in your own small farm projects, photos and videos that connected you to Brodhecker Farm in a more personal way.

I’ve enjoyed being part of your regular social media visits, have been happy to answer your questions and messages and I've always appreciated your positive feedback and interaction especially for my photography and articles.

In the coming days and for the foreseeable future, the Brodhecker Farm facebook site will go dark.

But you still can stay connected through the NaturallySussex FB page (that has also shared posts here!) The page covers a range of topics related to Sussex County happenings. We like to think of it as "THE BOUNTY OF SUSSEX COUNTY" .

We continue to support local agriculture and will feature several of the wonderful farms and folks that make up our farming community. Plus, we feature art and artists, nature, wildlife and more. The site is friendly, informative and diverse and a great way to enjoy the bounty this county has to offer even before you visit!

Once again, thank you for your support of my work on the Brodhecker Farm page, for being part of that community of followers and for the many “likes”, comments, questions that we shared.

I look forward to staying connected with you on the NaturallySussex FB page and to great things ahead.

Sincerely,
Nancy

After 10 years on FaceBook and developing other social media content and photos, it's time we acknowledge and recognize, Nancy Hreha, the woman behind the amazing outreach to our large and still growing online community. Nancy's professional and personal relationship with Brodhecker Farm and Phil Brodhecker began twenty years ago. She first met Phil when she moved to Sussex County with a passion for establishing her own small farm. In those early days, Nancy worked at the farm using her skills in sales and marketing to help us develop a true "one-stop shopping" experience for our customers. Her career evolved over time but her support never wavered. Nancy has been part of the farm family and our family throughout. She and Phil have shared a home for the past eight years.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Nancy's work and talent helped the farm grow by creating platforms to share insights into our farm business through her photography and videos. Nancy has also produced and publicized many of our community service events including "DROP YOUR JEANS" (a campaign to collect denim used to make blankets for wounded veterans) the press and PR events that marked our entry into the Black Oil Sunflower market in New Jersey and the expansion of our product line to include wild bird food seed and feeders. Nancy was responsible for the Sussex County Sunshine photo contest which invited photographers and lovers of sunflowers to share their pictures online and in print. Partnering our farm with her own platform at Naturally Sussex, the online photo gallery of submissions in three categories was shared across the globe by our online community, bringing awareness of NJ's entry into the sunflower market to a broad audience. Nancy also produced many onsite seminars and events hosted at the farm through the years including seminars on electric fencing, poultry and backyard birding. Most recently, Nancy was instrumental in putting together our farm's 50th-Anniversary Celebration event in October 2019.
Nancy has been our go-to person for print advertising, press releases and much more. Her professional contribution has helped us live up to our mission to,
"Let OUR Expertise Help YOU grow".
Many of you know Nancy from the farm or from partnering with Phil and crew for off-site events like Spring Fest, Poultry events, Sussex County Fair and Equine events. She's been Phil's right hand in organizing and working the event itself. Many of you may not have met "the woman behind the scenes" but have enjoyed her photos, content and videos.
As we mark this milestone, we want to extend this long-overdue acknowledgment and thank her for her personal and professional contributions through the years.

Join us in congratulating her and showing her some love by liking this post!

If you're lucky enough to have the opportunity to bring livestock into your family's lifestyle there are some basic essentials to consider when setting up your facility. Most are common sense...fresh water, shelter, good nutrition and a plan for managing the pasture, pen and shelter to keep it clean. The same basics apply to sheep, cows, horses and goats.
But if your family is considering welcoming those fun loving, all too adorable goats into your farm, they do have some habits that need consideration.
For the most part, with appropriate feeding, shelter and pasture most livestock is just too happy staying within the fenced area of their enclosure.
A goat's moto seems to be "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence" and they love to test that theory.
This could be because they are browsers rather than grazers or it could be because goats seem to be adventurous by nature. Securing the enclosure with fencing high enough to prevent jumping or climbing (yes they do both) and with panels that have openings small enough to prevent getting their head stuck is a consideration. This is especially true of horned goats who can remain stuck in the "pillory" till rescued- and be sure, the "lesson learned" doesn't last as they'll do it again!

If goats had a theme song it might be "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Goats LOVE to climb...and they are great at it! When setting up an enclosure including makeshift "jungle gyms" will satisfy their urge and provide mental stimulation which engages both adults and babies.

"Singing in the Rain" would definitely NOT be a theme song for goats. Goats do NOT like getting wet. If you're pasturing your goats make sure they have a temporary shelter for rainy days when they can't return to the barn.

Goats need copper in their diet. Supplementing feed with a mineral block that contains copper is always a great "free choice" idea.

Whether it's chickens, goats, sheep or other livestock, the experience of raising animals is one your family will cherish-especially when you've taken the time to set up a management system that allows you to be efficient with the chores giving you more time to enjoy!

Rats and mice carry disease and can destroy your investment in equipment and your animal's health and home. Cool nights have rodents scurrying for a hiding place. Once they settle in the problems multiply. The right bait will curb or eliminate the problem. Take action before your "nest" is infested. Talk to us about the variety of products available in our store...traps, bait and stations
can effectively address the problem.

The sun has set on the 2020 sunflower field

and as of August 23rd
the field is not open to the public.

We want to thank all those who came to our farm to enjoy the colorful flowers and shop in our farm store. We saw many returning visitors and many new friends! Your support for local agriculture is always recognized and appreciated.
As we watch the field enter its maturation-where flower heads bow down under the weight of the ripening seed, we look forward to the sunflower field 2021. And look forward to seeing you again soon!

SUNFLOWER ALERT: Sunflowers make EVERYONE happy! Our sunflower field continues to delight visitors. The lack of rain early in the season stunted their growth (usually 6-7ft and now average about 4-5ft tall) but it also staggered the maturity rate and has EXTENDED the bloom period. SO WE'RE EXTENDING THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE FIELD FOR ANOTHER WEEK! YEAH! The field is open to the public from sun up to sundown. $10.00 per carload. Come enjoy and be sure to stop by our farm store for our Brodhecker meats!
We've temporarily set up a produce stand with locally grown fruits and veggies that will compliment your Brodhecker broiler, beef or burger dinner! Photo credit: Evan Mangold

Sunflower Trivia: One sunflower head has the potential to produce between 1,000 and 1,400 seeds- if the deer don't get to them first lol! Apparently, one sunflower can also feed several bees at the same time too!

SUNFLOWER FIELD ALERT: The wait is over! Our sunflower field is beginning its peak bloom which will continue for the next two weeks or so. Our field is open to the public 7 days a week from sun up to sun down. $10.00 per CARLOAD. PARKING on the farm ONLY (please keep safety and our neighbors in mind and park is the designated area on the farm). Flower stems are available for purchase at $1.00 per stem. We will have stems available or will help you cut them.
The lack of rain earlier this season has stunted the height of the flowers but the recent rains have caused the field to burst into a sea of yellow and it is enchantingly beautiful. Bring your camera and enjoy!

SUNFLOWER FIELD UPDATE...and so it begins! There's a lot of promise but not much color yet in the sunflower field-just hints of yellow. One thing for certain, the sunflowers are THIRSTY for rain. Fingers crossed folks...a nice steady downpour would be most welcome!

August is here and admittedly it's a little strange to not be bustling to get our display to the Fairgrounds for the 2020 NJ State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show. The Brodhecker family has been involved with one aspect or another of the Fair for decades. Tom and Jane were involved since before the Fair location moved to the fairgrounds. The Brodhecker clan were 4H members and exhibited and competed every year with their animals. Later, Brodhecker Farm was an exhibitor, supporter, a buyer at the 4H market animal sale and a supporter of 4H kids and clubs. The Fair has been a summer milestone, a tradition and a happy time to gather with old and new friends to celebrate the best of Sussex County. We thought we'd share some memories from years past with you while we all look forward to 2021 and the chance to again celebrate the coming together of the best of the Sussex County community.
