The Reality of Camp

I don’t talk about this side of Camp Fur very often.

In the last couple months I’ve fallen, gotten dragged around, fractured my thumb, smashed my head open on my trunk 😭😂 and learned more lessons than I can count.

The dogs teach me something every single camp day.
I’ve let a dog join the pack too late into play and watched it create friction. I’ve let a dog get too far ahead on a group walk and realized how quickly it changed the energy. I’ve had plenty of moments where afterward I thought, ok…next time I’m doing that differently.

Yesterday one of my sweetest campers got hurt during an interaction with another dog that I wasn’t nearby for and was unable to intervene. She’s okay, but thinking about what I could have done differently and how I can prevent it next time is the only way I’ll grow and continue to keep the pack safe.

I’ve handled well over 200 camper visits in the past couple months, and outside of camp, thousands more canines throughout my career (which is almost ten years!) Keeping these dogs safe is something I take incredibly seriously. But we also have to be honest about what dogs are.

They are canines.

They have teeth and boundaries. They communicate physically and react in fractions of a second. They have their own personalities, histories, instincts, thresholds and play styles.
Instincts are real. Genetics are real.

We can supervise, structure groups carefully, understand body language, intervene and put a hundred precautions in place, but we cannot turn dogs into something they aren’t.

My responsibility isn’t to pretend nothing could ever happen. It’s to know the dogs in my care, keep them as safe as I possibly can, recognize when something isn’t working, take responsibility for my decisions and learn from every experience.
I’m still learning every day, some of these dogs are too! I hope I never reach a point in this career where I think I know everything there is to know about dogs.

September is officially open to new campers! 🍂🐶

Our already registered campers got first dibs on the schedule — one of the perks of being part of Camp Fur 🏕️ Now I’m opening the remaining spots to anyone interested in joining us!

If you’ve been following along and wondering what our camp days are all about, reach out! We can set up a meet & greet, get to know your pup, and see if Camp Fur is a good fit.

We have a few September/early October spots left and I’d love to welcome some new campers to the pack! 🐕🏕️

A little update from our first Lemon Aid Day 🍋

Because so many of you were incredibly generous with donations directly to our Camper Van Fund, we were able to give all of our cookie and treat sales from the day to Cold Nose Warm Heart!

And thanks to all of those donations, our Camper Van Fund is officially sitting a little over the $1,000 mark!

I’m continuing to save on my end too and plan to put my own savings toward the van when the time comes. This was only our first fundraiser, so I’m really excited to see how much closer we can get with the next one.

And seriously, thank you to everyone who showed up, donated, bought something, shared my posts, or even texted me to say you couldn’t make it but wished us luck. I don’t expect everyone to come to every event. Just knowing that you guys think about Camp Fur, share what I’m doing, or take a second to wish me luck means more to me than you probably realize.

Thank you for continuing to support this little business and everything I’m trying to build with it. We’re getting there!!

So many sweet faces today! Nothing sour here 🍋

Thank you so much to all of our fur friends and family who came out and supported our little event today! There were even a few Cold Nose Alumni 😝🏕️ This was only our first fundrasier and we definitely plan to keep bringing more to the community while we keep building our Camper Van Fund together.

Okay I’m doing it. 🚐

The Camp Fur NJ Camper Van Fund is officially STARTED!! 🏕️🐕

I’ve talked about wanting a camper van since basically the beginning of Camp Fur. We’re growing, our packs are growing, and having our own van would make pickups, transportation and camp days SO much easier and safer for everybody.

So instead of just continuing to say “one day” 😂 I made an actual fund and we’re gonna start working towards it. For the last month, I’ve been putting a little bit aside from each camp day towards our Camper Van Fund. 🏕️ I’m really excited to see what Camp Fur NJ can accomplish together as a community for our campers. I don’t care how long it takes us, little by little, we’re getting that van!!!

Absolutely NO pressure to contribute. I’ll be doing fundraisers, selling Camp Fur treats and finding fun ways to build it up as we go. But for anyone who has asked how they can help Camp Fur grow, you can officially contribute directly to the Camper Van Fund now. 🏕️🚐

And Tuesday’s Lemon Aid stand will be our first official fundraiser helping both Cold Nose Warm Heart AND our Camper Van Fund!

More dogs. More adventures. We just need that damn van. 😂

It was EVERYONE’S birthday today at camp!! 😂🎂 No one complained all day, so obviously they all deserved cake. Even Party Crasher Ember 🏕️
