Summer is here and temperatures are rising fast! Heatstroke awareness is crucial to ensure your furry family member stays safe in the sun, here are some helpful facts to keep in mind as you begin your summer fun
Heatstroke happens fast! But why?
Because dogs release heat through panting and only “sweat” from their paw pads, they are more prone to developing a heatstroke when overexposed to higher temperatures. This is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical attention. It is important to be mindful and plan to spend any extended periods of time outside in the early morning or evening when it's cool.
While any pet can suffer heatstroke, those that are overweight, dark coated, or brachycephalic breeds (such as French and English bulldogs, Shih Tzu, Pugs, Boxers, etc.) are at a higher risk.
What should you look out for?
Symptoms of heatstroke include excessive panting, increased salivation, darker gum color, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, and collapsing.
What should you do if you believe your pet is showing symptoms?
If you believe your pet is suffering from heatstroke, immediately begin misting or cooling with COOL water, not ice water, turn on a fan or the air conditioner in your car with the windows down and head to your nearest veterinary clinic ASAP!
Always make sure your pet has constant access to a bowl of cool water, adequate shade from the sun, and time walks and playtime around the temperature each day!
