๐ Happy factual Friday!
This week, we will be discussing the use of ultrasound in cattle and horses.
An ultrasound can be a very useful tool to help diagnose equine pregnancies as early as 14 days post breeding, and cattle pregnancies as early as 28 days post breeding (see the attached photo of a bovine fetal ultrasound). Ultrasound can also help determine fetal age and viability, providing an accurate due date. Additional fetal monitoring throughout pregnancy can also be performed using ultrasound, including measuring fetal heart rate and placenta thickness.
Ultrasound can also be used to scan for disease processes such as intestinal issues and various tumors. (Check out the attached photo of an equine ovarian granulosa cell tumor).
