πŸŽ€ DID YOU KNOW PETS CAN GET BREAST CANCER TOO? 🐾

In veterinary medicine, we call it mammary cancer β€” and both dogs and cats can develop mammary tumors.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to remind pet owners that awareness and early detection matter for our furry family members, too. πŸ’—

🐢 IN DOGS
Mammary tumors are especially common in unspayed female dogs or dogs that were spayed later in life. Some mammary tumors are benign, while others are cancerous.

🐱 IN CATS
Mammary tumors are less common in cats, but when they do occur, they are much more likely to be malignant. That makes early detection especially important.

πŸ”Ž WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FOR?
When giving your pet belly rubs, gently feel along the mammary chain β€” from the chest all the way toward the groin.

Contact your veterinarian if you notice:
β€’ A new lump, bump or firm area near a ni**le
β€’ Swelling or enlargement of a mammary gland
β€’ Redness, warmth or tenderness
β€’ Discharge or bleeding from a ni**le
β€’ An open or ulcerated area that isn’t healing
β€’ A lump that is growing or changing

Don’t assume a small lump is harmless. Mammary tumors can start out very small, and having them evaluated early can make a big difference in treatment options.

πŸ’• CAN MAMMARY CANCER BE PREVENTED?
Spaying female pets, particularly when performed early in life, can substantially reduce the risk of developing mammary tumors. Your veterinarian can help you discuss the appropriate timing of spay for your individual pet.

And yes β€” male pets can develop mammary tumors too, although it is uncommon.

πŸŽ€ This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remember to check yourself and your pets. A few extra belly rubs might just help you notice something important.

🐾 Feel something unusual? Give us a call. We would rather check a lump and have it be nothing than miss something that needs attention.

Help us wish a very happy birthday to one of the familiar, friendly faces of our team β€” Hannah! πŸ₯³πŸΎ

We hope your birthday is filled with lots of laughs, plenty of treats, and maybe a little less phone ringing than usual! πŸ˜‚πŸ“ž
