🎯 The 3 Ds of Dog Training

Ever said…

“But they KNOW how to do this!” 😩

They probably do—but dogs don’t automatically understand that something they learned in your quiet living room also applies in the backyard, at the park, or with another dog walking past.

That’s where the 3 Ds come in:

🐾 DISTANCE — How far away you are from your dog.

⏱️ DURATION — How long you’re asking your dog to maintain the behavior.

👀 DISTRACTION — What’s happening around your dog while you’re asking for the behavior.

The trick?

👉 Don’t make all three harder at once!

If you’re adding more distance, keep the duration short and distractions low.

If you’re adding distractions, move closer and make the behavior easier.

Build ONE piece at a time and give your dog a chance to succeed. 💜

This is also why practicing skills in different places is so important. Your dog isn’t being stubborn because their perfect “stay” disappeared at the park—they may simply need help understanding that the same rules apply in a completely different environment.

🐾💜 SEPTEMBER 1st PREVENTION CHECK-IN! 💜🐾

New month = you know what time it is! 😂

💉 Flea, tick & heartworm prevention check!

Parasites don’t look at the calendar and decide summer is almost over. 🦟🕷️ Consistent prevention is still important as we head toward fall.

So before you scroll away, do a quick check:

✔️ Prevention given?
✔️ This month’s dose ready?
✔️ Need to order a refill?
✔️ Not sure when it’s due? Go check!

Now let’s make this interactive. 👇

How prepared are YOU for September?

💜 = Already given/done!
👍 = Ready to give it
😬 = Thanks for the reminder…I almost forgot!
🏃‍♀️ = Excuse me while I go find the box…
📞 = I need to call my vet for a refill!

BONUS: Do you give prevention on the 1st of every month or do your pets have their own completely random schedule? 😂🐾

Drop your answer below!

And if this post just reminded you to give your dog’s prevention…

My job here is done. 😂💜

🐾 It’s Not ALWAYS About the Dogs! 🐾

🧡🐈 Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🐈🧡

Around here, dogs may get a lot of the spotlight…but they’re definitely not the only animals I get to care for!

My drop-in visits can include cats and a variety of other pets, too. And today belongs to those lovable orange troublemakers. 😂

Ginger cats certainly have a reputation for having BIG personalities—whether that’s deserved or not, I’ll let the orange-cat families decide!

So let’s see them! 👇

📸 Do you have a ginger cat?

Drop a picture in the comments and tell me their name—and whether they’re:

🧡 Sweet & snuggly
😈 Pure chaos
😂 A little bit of both

🦮 Reliable Recall Starts Long Before You Need It

Every dog owner dreams of a dog that comes when called.

The truth is… recall isn’t built in emergencies. It’s built during everyday moments.

Start in a quiet, distraction-free area.

🐾 Say your dog’s name.
🐾 Cheerfully say your recall cue (“Come!” or “Here!”).
🐾 When your dog comes to you…
🎉 Celebrate BIG!

Reward with treats, praise, toys, or whatever your dog loves most.

💡 Make coming to you the best part of your dog’s day!

As your dog becomes successful:
➡️ Practice in the backyard.
➡️ Use a long line in larger areas.
➡️ Slowly add distractions.

🚫 Don’t call your dog for things they dislike every time (bath time, nail trims, or leaving the park). Mix in lots of “just because” recalls that end with rewards and freedom to go play again.

Remember:
A reliable recall isn’t about control…
It’s about building trust that coming back to you is always worth it.

👀 Engagement: Getting Your Dog to Choose YOU

Before asking your dog to sit, stay, or come…

Ask yourself:

“Do I have my dog’s attention?”

Training doesn’t start with commands—it starts with engagement.

When your dog chooses to check in with you, even with distractions around, they’re telling you:

💜 “I’m ready to work with you.”

🎯 Build engagement by rewarding your dog for:
✔ Looking at you on their own
✔ Checking in during walks
✔ Choosing you over distractions
✔ Staying connected without being asked

The more your dog learns that paying attention to you is rewarding, the easier every other behavior becomes.

💡 Training Tip:
The next time you’re on a walk, don’t wait until your dog is distracted.

Reward them before they lose focus!

Engagement is the foundation of:
🐾 Loose leash walking
🐾 Reliable recall
🐾 Better focus
🐾 Confidence in new environments

Remember… we aren’t trying to become more interesting than the world.

We’re teaching our dogs that working with us is part of the adventure. 💜

🐾 SAVeD Rescue Needs Us 🐾

As a dog trainer who works in the rescue world, I see first hand just how hard things are getting.

Rescues like SAVeD run on donations and fosters. There really isn’t a way around it. No fosters means nowhere for dogs to go. No donations means no way to provide the food, supplies, vaccines, medications, and veterinary care they need.

I do both when I can—I foster and I donate—because I see where that help goes. 💜

Right now, SAVeD just stepped up for a mom and her SIXTEEN puppies. 😳🐶🐾

Yes… 16 puppies.

Some of these babies also came in with injuries that will require additional veterinary care, making an already huge undertaking even more expensive.

If you’re able to help, even a small donation matters. A lot of people giving a little can make a HUGE difference.

And if you’re in a position to do so, please consider becoming a monthly donor to SAVeD. Even $5 or $10 each month gives a rescue something incredibly valuable—a little dependable support they can count on when the next dog, litter, emergency, or medical case comes through the door.

💜 Donate once if you can.
🐾 Become a monthly supporter if you’re able.
📣 Can’t donate? Share this post. That helps too.

Because 16 puppies and their mom didn’t ask to need rescue—but thankfully, SAVeD said YES to all 17 of them. 💜🐾

Donation & Monthly Support:

Monthly supporters keep us going when donations are low.
