Chesapeake Animal Services is asking neighbors to step up and foster kittens. The shelter is hitting capacity during what staff say is shaping up to be one of the busiest kitten seasons in recent memory.

Almost 50 kittens were dropped off in just the past week alone, all under 8 weeks old. Since April 1, the shelter has taken in 224 kittens — and kitten season typically runs through the end of November.

"We're being inundated with kittens. We can't keep up with the amount that we have coming in as strays and we just, we really need Chesapeake's help," Outreach Coordinator Kasey Gallardo said.

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, and while not everyone is in a position to adopt, there are so many ways to make a difference for cats in need:
Catalyst Pet Natural Litter
❤️ Adopt when the time is right
❤️ Foster
❤️ Volunteer with a local shelter or rescue
❤️ Donate supplies or funds
❤️ Share adoptable cats on social media
❤️ Support organizations working to help animals in your community

Every act of kindness matters!

We're also incredibly grateful for companies like , whose support helps organizations across the country continue their work for cats and kittens in need. It takes an entire community! Animal lovers, volunteers, adopters, fosters, donors, businesses, and advocates to create better outcomes for these cats!

And we'd love to hear from you! Did you adopt your cat from a shelter or rescue? Have you fostered, volunteered, donated, or helped a cat find a home? Share your story in the comments. Your experience may be exactly what inspires someone else to get involved. 🐱💕

Something important to remember: Many of our lounge cats are rescue cats! That means they come with different histories, different personalities, and different comfort levels around people.

Some cats immediately want attention. Others are still learning that hands can bring kindness instead of fear. That's why one of the most important skills any cat lover can learn is how to read feline body language.

A twitching tail.
Pinned ears.
Wide eyes.
Excessive grooming.
A cat choosing to hide.

These aren't random behaviors. They're communication! When we slow down and listen to what a cat is telling us, we create safer, happier experiences for both people and cats. Watching a shy rescue cat choose to trust you is one of the greatest feelings in the world!
