Most dogs don’t just need a walk, they need a job on the walk. 🐾

When we ask for check-ins, pace changes, heeling, and sits when we stop, we’re giving them purpose and structure. That mental work keeps them engaged, connected, and calm instead of overstimulated and reactive.

Because the walk isn’t just about burning energy… it’s about building the relationship.

Touch me again and… oh hi! I’m Jillian, and yes — I’ll probably greet your dog before I say hi to you. 🐾🙋‍♀️

At Bark Collective, we can’t help it. Dogs come first here always! Boarding, daycare, training… we do it all with a smile (and usually a dog in our arms).

The internet is FULL of dog training advice… but not all of it is good.

Some videos look helpful — but they can actually set you and your dog back.

Here are 3 types of training videos to avoid:
1️⃣ “Instant Fix” Videos – If it promises to “stop barking/pulling/jumping instantly,” it’s usually suppressing the behavior, not solving it.
2️⃣ “Just Use More Treats” Videos – Treats are great, but if your dog only listens with a cookie in your hand, they’re not trained — they’re being bribed.
3️⃣ “Let Them Figure It Out” Videos – Leaving your dog to “figure it out” without guidance doesn’t build confidence — it builds confusion.

👉 Real training is about structure, clarity, and consistency — not quick hacks.

Did you know? 🐾

Pack walks aren’t just “extra exercise” - they’re one of the most powerful tools for creating calm, balanced dogs.

Walking together teaches dogs to move as a group, practice impulse control, and decompress in a structured, social setting. It’s mental work and leadership training all rolled into one.

At Bark Collective, pack walks are part of how we help dogs leave not just tired, but fulfilled.

“Check” might be the most underrated — and most powerful — command we teach at Bark Collective.

Here’s why: The first step in reactivity is always eye contact with the trigger. When a dog locks eyes on another dog, a skateboard, or a passing runner, their brain starts to spiral into that reactive state. But if we can teach them to “check in” — to look at us instead — we interrupt that cycle before it even starts.

We teach Check using chaining — a method where each step builds on the last. First, we teach a dog that looking at us earns reinforcement. Then, we add layers: looking away from a distraction, then immediately looking back for direction. Over time, the chain becomes seamless.

And here’s where DRA (Differential Reinforcement of Alternative behavior) matters. When we ask for “Check,” we’re asking the dog to perform a different, incompatible behavior — looking at us instead of staring down a trigger. And every time they make the better choice, we reinforce it.

The result? A dog who doesn’t just avoid reacting — but learns to actively engage with their handler in stressful moments.

This is what makes “Check” a game-changer for reactivity. It’s not just obedience — it’s trust, communication, and prevention, all in one simple word.
