May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Many Veterans return with unseen scars, such as Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI's), anxiety, and depression.

In addition to rescuing and training animals for our Veterans, all our trainers are required to take specialized training on PTS, TBI's, and active listening skills to better understand and engage with our Veterans.

We were blessed enough to receive a grant from Second Life Atlanta towards getting us a shed to hold all of our supplies for running the rescue. We are so appreciative of the community we have built and for all the donations we receive. However, it is getting harder to keep it all in our President's basement. Having a shed allows for us to be able to hold everything in one place as well as be able to have free access to our fosters. Sometimes there is something an animal needs quickly but our president is not at home. Having a shed with the fosters being able to have access to it to get whatever supplies they need will make a huge difference.

This unfortunately is not something that people usually donate towards as much as the animals themselves. We assure you that this is for the animals!! This keeps the supplies together and in good shape, allows for easy access for our fosters, and helps us to stay organized in everything that goes home with the animal once they get adopted. More importantly getting the shed prevents us from having to spend money on renting a space for the storage which keeps more money in the budget for the animals. That is why we are reaching out to you for your help to get us to our goal.

Please donate today

May is an important month for us as 2 of our 3 board members are veterans. May is both Military Appreciation Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. Did you know that having pets has been proven to assist veterans and individuals with mental health needs. Throughout the month we will be sharing information on these topics. In the meantime, here is a quick history on the origination of both.

Military Appreciation Month takes place every year throughout the entire month of May, reminding Americans to celebrate this patriotic month that pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

Although the entire month is designated to honoring past and present military members and their families, there are several, specific military holidays sprinkled throughout Military Appreciation Month itself, including Loyalty Day, VE Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual observance founded by Mental Health America in 1949 to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing, educate the public, reduce stigma and promote support for those affected by mental health conditions. Each year, individuals and organizations come together to raise awareness and advocate for better mental health care and resources.

Happy National DNA Day!!!

DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is the genetic blueprint for all living organisms, and it is located in the nucleus of all the cells in your body (except for red blood cells). The DNA in the chromosomes code for all biological functions in your body. Dogs/wolves have 39 pairs of chromosomes, or 78 total and domestic cats have 19 pairs of chromosomes or 38 total (Lyons 2012). The same concept of human DNA applies to these animals, where one chromosome comes from the mother and one from the father because we are mammal species. In the scientific and medical field of genetics, which specifically looks at DNA thoroughly, Veterinarians and Scientists can use this information and determine a lot of important aspects of your dog's/cat's breed and health status. Veterinarians and Scientists use genetic testing for your pet cat or dog to retrieve important information about the percentage of type of different breeds the dog/cat has, your dog's/cat's health status, and also may be used for research to study ways to advance the prevention, detection, progression and treatment of serious dog and cat health conditions which in turn can help in future generations of pets(Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine 2026).

For the entire month of April our great friends at Hollywood feed in Peachtree city will be collecting items for us to start preparing for kitten and puppy season. If you are not familiar with Kitten and Puppy season it tends to be March through October. Although, in climates that stay warm year-round the season can go year-round. This puts a huge strain on rescue groups and shelters. Found kittens and puppies require much more care and usually more medical needs. This takes a very large toll on the budget and supplies that rescue organizations and shelters have. If you are able to donate to your local animal welfare organizations, please do. Obviously, items are very important but if you are able to donate monetarily, PLEASE do. Every penny is used for the animals. If you are in store you can also round up your dollar to local rescue groups in need. Why not us :-)

HAPPY TAILS POST

BUSTER( FORMERLY HARVEY)

Some of you may remember Buster from last year. We pulled him from Fayette County Animal Shelter here in Peachtree City and took him up north to Maryland for his forever family. As you can see he still has that sweet Disney face and is enjoying his life greatly. He has a group of dog friends and many volunteer people babysitters. He is just as delightful as always and we are thrilled his life is so wonderful :-)

Remember Fiona???

Well we told you that we had a great story about her adoption and we were not lying. It was so good that it made The Newnan Times Herald(February 7th edition)!!! Fiona ended up being adopted by a loving family who had adopted one of her siblings 2 years prior. Not only is she living her best life but so are all her siblings and her mom!!
We got some of the siblings together with their mom for a little dog family reunion in downtown Newnan and it truly was a wonderful reunion. It is always so hard to coordinate schedules so not all of the siblings could make it but we did get some updated photos to share.
In order we have the cover photo of the article, Fiona and her sister Liza, Ellie Mae, Austin, Celeste, The mom Sadie(now called Pistol), Gus, Cecilia, and Bella.
It takes a village to help the homeless pet community. Fiona's story is proof of that. If you have ever wanted to help save the animals now is the times. Wherever you live and what ever resources you have are immeasurable. If you can't adopt, foster. If you can't foster, volunteer. If you can't volunteer, donate. If you can't donate, help spread the word. There is always something that you can do to help save the animals.
A special thank you to The Newnan Times Herald especially Will Thomas, Newnan Coweta Humane Society, Dragonfly Running Company, and Heidi & Bryce Ronfeldt.
