Meet Buttercup 🌼

Age: 10 years
Breed: Golden Retriever
Weight: 93 lbs. (working toward a healthier weight)

Buttercup came to Nickel City Canine Rescue after her owners became ill and were no longer able to care for her. While losing the only home she’d ever known wasn’t easy, Buttercup hasn’t let it dim her loving spirit.

This sweet senior girl has never met a stranger. Every person she meets is greeted with a wagging tail and hopeful eyes, ready for pets and affection. Each morning, Buttercup proudly carries a toy to her foster family while making the cutest little “seal” noises to announce that she’s awake and ready for love. Then she’ll happily plop herself in front of the nearest person, patiently waiting for ear scratches and belly rubs.

Don’t let her age fool you—Buttercup still gets excited for her daily adventures! She may not be up for long hikes or marathons, but the moment she sees her leash, her tail starts wagging. She loves short daily walks and spending time with the people she adores.

Buttercup is wonderful with children and is currently living with her 4- and 6-year-old foster siblings. She soaks up every bit of attention they give her and is incredibly gentle, including when taking treats. She has shown no resource guarding or aggression with food, treats, or toys.

Buttercup does have some hip issues, and has been taking pain medication. She is slow getting up in the morning but once she is up and moving she’s been doing great- even chasing after an occasional bird.

Buttercup’s ideal home:

* A home where she can be the only pet. While Buttercup loves every human she meets, she’d prefer to be the queen of the castle—and after 10 years, we think she’s earned that right.
* A single-story home or one with very few steps. She can manage 2–3 steps but isn’t able to navigate a full flight of stairs.
* A family committed to helping her reach a healthier weight with portion control and short daily walks.
* Most importantly, someone who will cherish her and give her the love, comfort, and companionship she deserves throughout her golden years.

Buttercup has so much love left to give. If you’re looking for a loyal best friend who will greet you every morning with a toy, melt into every pet, and remind you to slow down and enjoy life’s simple moments, Buttercup is waiting to meet you.
