Friends of the Shelter Foundation

Friends of the Shelter Foundation We are a foster-based non-profit dog and cat rescue in central Oklahoma dedicated to helping rural O We're also the official Rottweiler rescue for the state.

Our foster-based rescue (no facility) focuses on saving all breeds of dogs and cats, mixed or purebred, that are in need in Oklahoma rural shelters. All of the animals in our care live in foster homes with families so they can learn basic training and manners. Every pet is spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and kept on monthly flea, tick and heartworm preventative. Many of t

he pets we rescue are medical cases, and that can get expensive at times but we never turn a pet away if we know a little TLC and Vet care can save its life. Our mission is to save the ones that would never set foot outside the walls of a shelter: those that are sick, injured or overlooked due to breed discrimination, size or color.

Update: Our website is back online.

Old Update: TL;DR: The rescue website is down due to a provider outage.

Some users may not be able to visit our website https://shelterfriends.org, as our host provider has suffered an outage at one of their main data centers. It might take some time before full capacity returns and our website is fully accessible.

In the meantime, you can find our rescue on Petfinder at the following link: https://www.petfinder.com/member/us/ok/newcastle/friends-of-the-shelter-foundation-ok390/
You can also reach us via messenger, or email, if you have any questions. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

With more adoptable pets than ever, we have an urgent need for pet adopters. Search for dogs, cats, and other available pets for adoption near you.

It's with the heaviest of hearts we make this post.

Hamilton didn’t make it.

And y’all, I’m tired.

I’m tired in a way that’s hard to put into words tonight.

Earlier today, we asked you to help us fight for this tiny 12-week-old kitten. We hoped we’d have more time. We hoped treatment would work. We hoped we could save him.

We couldn’t.

And now I’m sitting here wondering the question that makes rescue so incredibly hard: Was Hamilton already too sick by the time we realized what was happening, or could more money, more resources, and more options have changed the outcome?

I don’t know.

I may never know.

And that is exhausting.

Because we are out here every single day busting our butts trying to save as many animals as we possibly can. We take the calls. We find the fosters. We arrange the transports. We make the vet appointments. We beg for donations. We stretch every dollar until there is nothing left to stretch.

But love doesn’t pay a veterinary bill.

Determination doesn’t create money that isn’t there.

And sometimes an animal needs more than we have to give.

That is the part of rescue that breaks you.

Hamilton deserved the chance to grow up. He deserved years of zoomies and toys and knocking things off counters and being somebody’s spoiled rotten cat.

Instead, we got 12 weeks.

To everyone who donated, shared, commented, prayed, and hoped alongside us today: thank you. Please know that your support mattered. Hamilton mattered.

Tonight, I don’t have an uplifting ending or some perfect thing to say.

I’m just sad.

I’m tired.

And tomorrow, there will be another animal who needs us.

I just desperately want us to have the resources to say yes when they do.

Rest easy, sweet Hamilton. We’re so sorry we couldn’t give you more time. šŸ’”šŸ¾

🚨 **DIRE EMERGENCY: 12-WEEK-OLD HAMILTON IS FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE** 🚨

Our sweet 12-week-old kitten, Hamilton, went from zooming around to critically ill overnight. He has just been diagnosed with **histoplasmosis**—a severe, high-risk fungal infection—and requires immediate, intensive emergency veterinary care to survive.

Hamilton is fighting with everything he has, but his life-saving care is far beyond our current rescue funds, and we cannot afford these treatments without you right now.

We need our community to step up immediately so we can keep fighting for him.
