Road closure near the clinic! Newberry is growing and that means construction. CR 235 through Newberry by Publix will be closed for several months (thanks for the update). That means there will be a detour to get to the clinic. You can go towards High Springs on Highway 27 to 78th Ave, head back towards Gainesville, then turn right on 235, or from Newberry Road, take the paved side of 202nd Street north until it dead ends then turn left, and, then left on 235. Give us a call or text if GPS leaves you hanging and we will activate the EPS. What is the EPS you ask? It's our affectionate term for the Erica Positioning System. Dr. Lacher knows all the ways around all the roads in Alachua county, and for a limited time she's offering it to our clients 😅

Cats are masters at masking discomfort, which makes routine wellness care especially important.
Keep an eye on:
• Appetite and water intake
• Weight changes
• Litter box habits
• Activity and playfulness
• Grooming and coat condition
• Suddenly riding horses
Often, the first sign that something is different is simply that your cat isn't acting quite like themselves. Those observations can be valuable information!
If you notice persistent changes in behavior, appetite, litter box habits, or activity level, schedule a conversation with the Companion Animal Clinic at Springhill Equine.

Answer Thursday: Pastern Dermatitis
And the long list of other names:
➡️ Scratches
➡️ Greasy heel
➡️ Dew poisoning
➡️ Mud fever
➡️ Cracked heels
➡️ Mud rash
➡️ Grease heel
➡️ And a few other colorful horse-world names 😉
This condition affects the skin around the pasterns and heel bulbs and often shows up as scabs, crusting, irritation, redness, or soreness. Wet conditions, damaged skin barriers, bacteria, fungi, mites, and allergies can all contribute.
Our favorite approach is prevention first.
✔️ Support healthy skin with good-quality nutrition
✔️ Avoid excessive clipping around the pasterns when possible
✔️ Keep horses clean and reasonably dry
✔️ Use moisture barriers during muddy/wet seasons
For horses prone to scratches, diaper rash ointment every day to every other day can work well as a simple moisture barrier.
When treatment is needed, we reach for EquiShield CK Shampoo weekly, EquiShield CK Salve daily.
Avoid aggressive scrubbing
Don’t pick dry scabs off forcefully
Keep the area dry between treatments
Monitor for swelling, pain, or lameness
More severe cases sometimes require antibiotics, sweat bandaging, silver sulfadiazene, or additional diagnostics to identify underlying causes.
Recurring pastern dermatitis can sometimes point toward allergies, mites, photosensitivity, or environmental challenges, so persistent cases are worth discussing us!

This little guy might be dramatic, but he's not wrong! Routine veterinary care is one of the most important things you can do for your pet's long-term health, and it's easier to stay on top of than you might think.
Here's what we recommend keeping current for your dog:
✅ Annual wellness exams: catching small issues before they become big ones
💉 Core vaccinations: protecting against serious and preventable diseases
🦟 Heartworm testing & prevention: heartworm is common in our area and 100% preventable
🔬 Flea, tick & parasite screenings: because no one wants uninvited guests
If it's been a while since your pup's last visit, now is a great time to get back on track. Give us a call!

Introducing Shane and Ilya: two kittens available for adoption, named after a heated rivalry, and dressed for the occasion.
Yes, those are hockey uniforms. Yes, they earned them.
Shane is the brooding one. Intense eye contact, loud opinions after dark, secretly the first one to want cuddles. Ilya is quieter about it, but make no mistake, he's always watching, always calculating, and always stealing the warmest spot.
Together? They chase, they wrestle, they steal each other's food, and they sleep in a pile like none of it ever happened. Classic rivals. Classic bonded pair.
Interested in giving Shane and Ilya their forever home? Give us shout!

Weekend Warrior riders 🤝 Weekend Warrior horses
A lot of us ask our bodies to go from “minimal athletic activity all week” to “let’s barrel race/jump/show for 6 hours on Saturday.”
Our horses sometimes feel that plan too.
When horses go from lighter weekday schedules to a much harder weekend workload, it can occasionally show up as:
stiffness
slower recovery
soreness the next day
feeling less balanced
resistance that seems unusual
That doesn’t always mean there’s a major problem, but it is worth paying attention to.
Thoughtful conditioning, warm-ups, cooldowns, and recovery days can all help support horses asked to perform big jobs on the weekends.
And honestly… some horses probably have the same thoughts about Monday morning soreness that we do.
Let us help you formulate the perfect program for your horse, your life, and your competition schedule. From strength training to sports medicine support, good weekends start with a good plan.
