At 38 years old, with registration papers to prove it, Pirate Jack reminds us that age and size never determine the level of care a horse deserves.

Lovingly known as “Pirate Jack” due to having one eye, this tiny gelding recently came to us uncomfortable with a foreign body lodged in his cornea. Dr. Devon Hodge carefully removed the grass seed, and we’re happy to report he is doing well.

From elite performance horses to beloved senior minis, every horse matters to us. Their comfort, quality of life, and the bond they share with their owners is always worth protecting. 💙

This week's Foal Friday comes with a happy ending and a reminder of why emergency care matters.

This sweet little one arrived healthy and ready to take on the world. But mom needed a little extra help. After foaling, the mare developed a retained placenta, a serious condition that becomes an emergency when fetal membranes aren't passed within a few hours of delivery.

Left untreated, a retained placenta can lead to dangerous complications like infection, endotoxemia, sepsis, and laminitis therefore, so time is everything.

Dr. Porter sprang into action. Dr. Porter performed a uterine lavage, gently flushing the uterus to clear retained membranes and debris, while Dr. Helinger assisted throughout the procedure. Thanks to quick intervention, this mama is on the road to recovery and back to doing what she does best, being a mom. 💛

Foaling season is beautiful, but it can turn critical fast. If something doesn't look right after your mare delivers, don't wait. Our team is here to assist.

☀️ Summer Training, Reimagined ☀️
Florida summers are brutal on us, and on our horses. Heat, humidity, hard ground, and the constant threat of overheating make traditional conditioning a real challenge this time of year.
But what if your horse could stay in peak condition without the heat stress and pounding concussion on joints?
Enter the AquaPacer. 💧
Most people think of underwater treadmill therapy as a rehab tool; something you turn to when a horse is coming back from injury. And while it's incredible for that, the AquaPacer is just as powerful as a conditioning tool for sound, working horses:
✔️ Low-impact cardiovascular work that builds fitness without pounding joints
✔️ Engages the topline, hindquarters, and core in ways flatwork can't
✔️ Naturally cooling your horse stays comfortable even when it's 95° outside
✔️ Builds and maintains muscle through resistance, not repetition
✔️ Perfect for horses on lighter summer schedules who still need to stay tuned up
Whether you're prepping for fall shows, maintaining fitness through the off-season, or simply giving your equine athlete a smarter way to train in the Florida heat, the AquaPacer keeps them moving forward.
🌊 Something special is coming soon for summer. Stay tuned. 🌊

🚨 EQUINE EYE EMERGENCIES SHOULD NEVER WAIT 🚨

This horse sustained an injury to the eyelid and was seen on emergency to assess whether there was damage to the eye itself.

Fortunately, the eye itself was not injured, and the trauma was limited to the eyelid, which required careful suturing and repair.

While we are not exactly sure how this injury occurred, it serves as an important reminder to evaluate your horse’s environment for potential hazards. Bucket hooks, snaps, clips, protruding hardware, and sharp edges can all pose a risk for serious facial and eye injuries if a horse gets caught or rubbed against them.

Even seemingly minor injuries around the eye should always be evaluated promptly, as trauma to the eye itself can quickly become vision-threatening.

Signs of an eye emergency may include:
• Squinting or holding the eye closed
• Excessive tearing
• Swelling around the eye
• Redness or cloudiness
• Cuts or bleeding near the eye

Prompt veterinary assessment and treatment can make all the difference in preserving comfort and vision. If your horse is having an emergency contact us at 352-538-9165

🐴Colic Emergencies: Why We Perform a FAST Scan

When a horse presents with signs of colic, time matters but so does information.

In this case, Dr. Michael Porter is performing a FAST Scan (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma/Triage), a rapid ultrasound evaluation that allows us to gather critical information alongside the physical exam, re**al palpation, and other diagnostics.

A FAST Scan helps us quickly assess what may be happening internally and guides important treatment and referral decisions.

What are we evaluating during a FAST Scan?

🔹 Is the stomach distended?
A severely distended stomach may indicate an obstruction and can increase the risk of gastric rupture.

🔹 Are there distended loops of small intestine?
This can suggest a small intestinal obstruction or surgical lesion.

🔹 Is there evidence of colon displacement?
We evaluate the nephrosplenic space to look for abnormalities such as left dorsal displacement of the colon.

🔹 Is there pleural pneumonia?
Not every horse that appears “colicky” has a primary gastrointestinal problem. Ultrasound allows us to assess the thorax as well.

🔹 Is there free abdominal fluid?
The presence, amount, and character of abdominal fluid can provide valuable information regarding inflammation, compromise, or intestinal injury.

🔹 What is the thickness of the colon and cecal walls?
Increased wall thickness may indicate inflammation, edema, or other serious gastrointestinal changes.

A FAST Scan is not a replacement for a complete colic workup, It is an additional diagnostic tool that helps us make faster, more informed decisions for your horse when every minute counts.

If you think your horse is experiencing a colic emergency, contact us at 352-538-9165

At PHD Veterinary Services, collaboration between our veterinarians allows us to combine experience, diagnostics, and different perspectives to create the best plan for each horse. In this case, Dr. Porter and Dr. Hodge worked together during an ultrasound evaluation, discussing findings in real time and helping guide the owner through the available options and next steps.

We believe owners should understand not only what we are seeing, but why it matters and what the treatment options look like moving forward. Clear communication and collaborative care are a big part of the PHD way.

Because detailed diagnostics lead to better decisions and better outcomes for the horse.
