"We call on teachers, school systems and parents to bring nutrition education to the classroom — Zoom or otherwise — for the first time. Let’s make sure the next generation understands the connection between food and health. "

Now more than ever, our work in food education is needed. We are seeing the toll coronavirus is taking on those with compromised systems, most especially people suffering from food related illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In addition, EcoSpaces Education remains driven by the needs and diversity of our communities, most especially now during a period of instability with marginalized groups being disproportionately affected. Literacy in our food systems is an empowering tool for the future wellness and strength of our communities.

March 30, 2020

Dear Community,

Today marks the day in our calendars we were scheduled to gather for the Growing Healthy Communities Conference 2020. Much has changed in a few weeks. We have so much to think about and do right now, but I wanted to acknowledge this day in some way.

We have been connecting to teachers, foodservice staff, and school leaders throughout the past few weeks and I continue to see passion, compassion, and love lead the way.

We know many of you are educators and in the midst of all of this turmoil you are offering your students remote, online and home-learning while you continue to respond to this pandemic in your own lives. You have seamlessly refocused your efforts and are so impressive in your continued commitment. We thank you.

Our conferences have always been enriched by the incredible contributions of our expert presenters and speakers, but for us, the highlight is the gathering together of community - meeting, sharing and building new relationships stemmed from the commonality of a commitment to children. It is community that makes us stronger and will help us navigate through these challenging times.

We know we will gather again in the future, but for now, we send you a message of solidarity and hope.

Be well, stay safe and look forward.

Warmly,

Frank Mentesana

Dear Community,

It is with great disappointment, that in light of the current global health situation we have decided to cancel the 2020 Growing Healthy Communities Conference.

We know from your past feedback how powerful gathering together on this day has been. That being said, take comfort and pride in knowing we are a community of people who care about changing the health and wellness of our kids, schools and families and will gather again sometime in the near future.

If you have paid a conference registration fee, we will be working to issue refunds within the next week.

Stay safe, responsible and calm during these trying times and remember we grow stronger together.

Best,
The EcoSpaces Education Team
