Ohio dog owners, this is something you should be paying attention to.
A new law called Avery’s Law goes into effect March 18, 2026, and it changes quite a bit about dog ownership in Ohio.
Dogs can now be labeled nuisance, dangerous, or vicious based on behavior, not just bite history. With that comes more responsibility on the owner and real consequences if something happens, including fines and potential charges depending on the situation.
A lot of this comes down to control.
If your dog is running loose, not listening, or you cannot confidently handle them in real life situations, that now matters on a different level. It is not just frustrating anymore, it can come back on you legally.
This also applies to anyone handling your dog, including trainers and board and train programs, while the dog is in their care.
This is exactly why I put so much focus on structure and real world obedience. Not just commands in the house, but being able to take your dog out and actually trust them and handle them.
Training is not just about having a “good” dog anymore, it is about responsibility and preventing situations before they happen.
