πŸ‘† The greens powder I use for my german shepherds

Crusty eyes, dry nose, red paws. They're more connected than you think πŸ‘€

The topper I pour over breakfast:
🐟 1 sardine in water, no added salt, mashed
πŸ₯š 1 cooked egg
πŸ₯₯ Half a teaspoon of coconut oil
🟑 A tiny pinch of turmeric

Mix it and pour it over their food every morning. Healthy fats and omega-3s that support the skin barrier.

But if it keeps coming back no matter what you do, it's usually starting in the gut. And shepherds have one of the most sensitive guts of any large breed 🦠

Watch to the end for what handles the cause πŸ‘†

Antlers, bones, hooves, hard nylon. With a shepherd's bite, that's how teeth crack 🦷

Here's what I make instead:
πŸ₯• Big carrots, cut lengthways into thick batons
🍲 Covered in plain bone broth, overnight in the fridge
🧊 Frozen, then left out a few minutes before serving

Firm enough to work the gums, and it gives way before a tooth does. A 10-second snack becomes a 10-minute job.

⚠️ Plain broth only, no onion, garlic or salt. And stay in the room while they chew.

Store treats can list 30 ingredients. These have 3 🍠

🍠 1 cooked sweet potato, mashed
πŸ₯œ A spoonful of xylitol-free peanut butter
πŸ₯š 1 egg

Roll into small balls, bake at 350Β°F for 15 minutes. Done.

Gut-friendly fiber, real protein, and it costs almost nothing.

⚠️ Check the peanut butter for xylitol β€” it's toxic to dogs and can hide on labels as "birch sugar."

Your shepherd's water bowl is the one thing you fill every day without thinking about it πŸ‘€

🚱 Chlorine β€” kills bacteria, and that includes the good ones in the gut
🚱 Fluoride β€” builds up year after year
🚱 Lead and arsenic β€” settle in the kidneys and liver

A filter pitcher fixes the bowl in ten seconds.

It doesn't undo months or years of it, though. On one of the most gut-sensitive large breeds, that's often where the bad breath, the paw licking and the low energy start 🦠

Stay to the end for what supports the gut after all that πŸ‘†

Four fruits I keep in rotation for my shepherds πŸ‰

πŸ‰ Watermelon β€” 92% water, almost no calories. Keeps them lean, which takes pressure off those hips.
🫐 Blueberries β€” one of the highest antioxidant foods there is.
🍍 Pineapple β€” has bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory that supports the joints.

And the fourth one is the one most shepherd owners never think to give πŸ‘€

⚠️ Seedless watermelon with no rind, and pineapple without the skin or core. A few pieces at a time.

The vitamins didn't go into your shepherd. They went down the sink 😳

Everything that cooks out of carrots and green beans ends up in the pot water. Strain it into a jug, let it cool, then pour it over their food or freeze it into cubes for later.

With a shepherd this matters more than it does for other dogs. Their stomach is the most sensitive of any big breed, so you can't just keep switching foods to get more nutrients in. This adds something without changing a thing about their meal 🦠

⚠️ Plain water only. No salt, no stock cubes, and never a pot that had onion or garlic in it β€” both are toxic to dogs.

That double coat hides the skin, so the eyes, the nose and the paws are the three places it shows up first πŸ‘€

One sardine packed in water, mashed. One cooked egg. Half a teaspoon of coconut oil. A tiny pinch of turmeric. Mix it and pour it over their food every morning.

Healthy fats and omega-3s feeding the skin barrier, so the eyes stay cleaner, the nose softens and the paws settle down.

The catch is that none of it reaches the inside. If it keeps returning, it's starting in the gut 🦠

⚠️ Read the can before you buy it. Water, not oil, and no added salt.

Watch to the end for what actually stops it coming back πŸ‘†

One bag of carrots. Two hours. Two hundred treats πŸ₯•

Peel the sides into thin strips, lay them out on a wire rack, bake at 170Β°F for two hours and let them cool.

Low calorie, almost no cost, and they help scrub the plaque while they chew. And with a stomach this sensitive, something this plain is about as safe as a treat gets.

Warm water and a quarter cup of Epsom salt. Ten minutes πŸ§‚

The magnesium helps draw the inflammation out of the skin and calms the burning that's making them lick their paws raw.

Shepherds are one of the most allergy-prone breeds there is, and the fur between the toes traps moisture and allergens right against the skin. The irritation builds up with nowhere to go.

⚠️ Pat dry between every toe afterwards, or the damp gives it somewhere to flare back up.
⚠️ Skip it if the skin is already broken or raw.

Within a couple of weeks the licking eases, the swelling goes down and the paws stop looking so angry.

But soaks only reach the outside. If it keeps flaring up, it's coming from somewhere else πŸ‘†

Three things from your kitchen, and it starts to firm up in days πŸ₯„

A spoonful of plain pumpkin, a spoonful of plain kefir, and half a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger. On top of their food, once a day.

The pumpkin adds the fiber, the kefir settles the digestive tract, and the ginger calms the irritation keeping everything loose.

That's the part you can see. And with a shepherd everyone writes it off as a sensitive stomach, which is exactly why nobody looks any further πŸ‘†
