It’s WCW and it just seems appropriate to talk about who Melon is and how she has changed since our trip to Nashville. SA, there were really too many stories to tell and I promise I will get to those.
In TN, my goal for Melon was to have her learn some healthy manners with other dogs. Like I mentioned with Lukey-in the city, I set my dogs up for success by creating positive only associations with dogs who compliment her play and her temperment. Dogs who don’t we do obedience only drills and reinforce coexistence simply because the room for liability and exploratory learning is limited and so is the space.
In the city Melon could be pretty rough with her play. With toys, she was pushy and quite forceful in how she played and how she took toys from other dogs. It was good for her confidence to win a lot and build good associations with other dogs, especially in her puppyhood. As an adult, that behavior was actually making her a little bit of a bully, no pun intended. If anything, she was becoming entitled to the toys and resources which was set to be a problem in the long run. Sure, we practiced desensitizing her, our recall and gave her an on and off switch in play, but that will never replace healthy balanced dog socialization which embodies dogs switching roles in how they play, quality corrections, conflict and conflict resolution. Bottom line, when she was romping around, toys or no toys, she was never properly corrected by any dogs except Lukey, and even his corrections were pretty meaningless to her-she just blew past them which then forced me to intervene, sometimes more heavily than I liked. It’s certainly not the worst way raise or teach a puppy boundaries, but I firmly believe that in order for a dog to have quality socialization, it’s important they learn to read signals from other dogs without or with minimal human intervention.
Which brings me to Pusa. Pusa, when meeting humans, when interacting with him, he’s soft natured. In the yard, his work mode is turned on. He will carry a silence, an energy through his eyes and you can feel him working.

Just here for some Lukey talk because this dog, the dog I felt I had always failed with, exceeded my expectations at every opportunity while on the road but especially in Nashville.
Morgan really does have such a unique set up at . She has a backyard with groups of dogs out there together. She knows which dogs belong with whom and her dog Pusa really does a very good job patrolling the yard if she were to step away for a second. Needless to say, it’s a good system and yet, my city brain struggled hard with the unfamiliar. Trusting my dogs to socialize without me being there that’s just unheard of when you live in such a dense city with.
So when I was staying at Morgan’s and I saw Lukey in the yard with her and like 6 other dogs we didn’t know, my stomach twitched for a second😳. That was a learning moment for me. I had to stop myself from moving and look at him, his body language, his ears, tail, facial cues etc. and the thing was, he genuinely looked happy. With a loose demeanor, sniffing around, he was unfazed by the play around him. I was reminded that I was not there to helicopter the way I do at home in the city, but to experience a new type of training setting and see how my dogs respond to it.
Turns out, he’s a fantastic flipping dog and he responded beautifully to Morgan’s set up and her dogs. By letting go of my ego, my way, my fears I learned these things about Lukey:
He walks away from dogs when he’s not into something.
He just wants to sniff & mildly run.
When he got pounced on by younger dogs, he growled and bared his teeth appropriately to signal he was not interested.
When he got bit by another dog, he mentally recovered & recovered quickly with guidance.
He was trusting, curious, and enthusiastic to meet other dogs despite his age, dog reactivity, dog fights and history. He doesn’t hold grudges.
There are times he did better in the yard when me or Matt weren’t there.
His relationship with Melon and his trust with her does indeed look differently than the way he is with other dogs.
Lukey is 11 going on 12 yo. and if there’s any tip here to give, it’s that your dog’s behavior is never set in stone. Cont below⬇️

We’re back, baby!! Back in the city, back on IG and back on the Barkville grind. It was a superfluous roadtrip with Matt and the dogs. Learning, evolving and connecting with my dogs, friends and our family was something so surreal that each day I found it better to just put down my phone and be present with it all.
The space in both Nashville and San Antonio gave me the time and space myself to just let my dogs be dogs. My city life has both forced and made me apprehensive to give loose limits. While away we didn’t abandon all training, but we certainly took the time to learn who my dogs really were. How do they handle conflict, play, share toys, handle new dogs, social corrections, new experiences, new people etc.
I’m overwhelmed in where to begin sharing, but I’m going to do my best to post more and hopefully the lessons I’ve learned along the way will speak to some of you too❤️.

It’s been a stupendous week with Morgan and her pack and I’m overwhelmed in the best possible way!! There is just so much amazing lessons, pictures, and content to share and I’m beyond grateful to Morgan for including me in all of it. Between all the events, dog boardings, socialization sessions, etc. I had to create a new folder for all the pictures and videos taken just so I can sort through everything before jumping into my next week of dog training exposure which will look slightly different from this week’s work.
In the meantime, here is secretary Melon, catching up on her emails and here to let you all know that some amazing content is coming featuring many of Morgan’s dog’s and some anecdotal pieces reflecting on my own dog’s experiences while here in Nashville❤️

Happy Monday from the gang and my latest B&T, Brasso!
He’s a very good dog who will be an excellent source for educating others especially when it comes to defining dog reactivity and determining what is healthy excitement.
These are two very loaded concepts that are too heavy for a simple Monday post but rest assured I will be diving deeply into both concepts in separate posts in the next few days.
But for the time being, just enjoy these very cute dogs smiling and snoozing on this lovely day. Enjoy the weather everyone!☀️🐶

Happy Dog Mom day to all the incredible women who keep pushing and striving for greatness within themselves and their dogs. Being a trainer and a owner, I am always in awe of the women I work with who are choosing to rise above their comfort level for the dogs they love. That to me is what makes an incredible dog mom and human.
I hope you all continue to find empowerment in your dog mom roles as much as I do. While I only own 2 dogs, I have many that I take in that I truly love and consider as my own.
Wishing all the dog moms out there a day full of love, strength and empowerment! 💪🏼❤️🐶

All my loves here in one spot❤️ Happy Valentines Day everyone!💝
I know I’ve been on the quiet side of the gram. I do plan on coming back and being more active. But as for now, I’m finding great joy in reconnecting with myself, my family, my dogs, and their training in an off camera fashion. Till then, we love you all and hope everyone has a wonderful day full of puppy love🥰❤️🐶

Today we are having a rest day and I was feeling super guilty up until the moment I took this photo.
Mother Nature has come and blessed melon with a heat cycle which of course conflicted with my plans that I had originally planned for us. There was so much stuff I wanted to accomplish with Melon’s public access work and this week I was freed up to do it. So even with the rain, with her period, when she showed enthusiasm for anything I was pushing our old routines and only making very very small progress which left me feeling discouraged.
But today, I left Melon out while watching TV and after I put her diaper on, she leaned in like this as I was getting my gear. She just wanted to cuddle and it suddenly clicked that I needed to slow down and listen to my dog and stop myself from pushing us so hard. By listening to her, I gave permission to myself to just be😌Hope everyone has a relaxing weekend!

Where does your dog stand when you’re at a crosswalk?
For us, the answer is demonstrated in the above picture. Lukey is to my right and Noodle is standing behind me.
As a general city dog training rule, it’s almost always safest to have your dog(s) be either next to you or behind you at any crosswalk or threshold. Yes, even if there is no traffic or if you live on a quiet street, they should be next to you or behind you feeling and looking relaxed and waiting to move on your cue. With NYC being as tight as it is, I really feel any other type of behavior, where your dog is not focused on you, will make it unsafe for you and your dog(s) when crossing streets.
What do you think? And how do you practice safe city walking?
