Harlem Cats

As I've been sharing on Instagram (where we are, ahem, more active...sorry!), our group took over care of six senior cats a few weeks ago. We helped their mom get them all vetted as young kits over a decade ago. Thanks to being microchipped to us, we learned from the NYC shelter when the mom surrendered them all. She just couldn't care for them anymore.

So sad, especially for these babies, now 11/12 year old (!). They were so depressed and shut down in the shelter. THANKFULLY our group was able to take them in to foster through our amazing cat rescue community. Now some of them are moving along to more permanent homes.

But they all need vetting, especially dental work. We started a Go Fund Me for Bricks--the star of the gang, the most social and outgoing who has a place to go at the end of this week. Yay!!! To prepare for his happy next spot, we have a dental appt for Bricks tomorrow (Monday).

If you're able to pitch in for Bricks' dental, we would appreciate it so much! We are getting close to our target and want to get a little closer so we can give the vet the go ahead to give him everything he needs. Almost certainly some extractions (the shelter found he had chipped and damaged teeth) and a good cleaning.

Mimi cracks us up with her silly play and coy requests for pets. We are so happy that she seems to have long forgotten the days at the end of 2025 that she was hiding under a parked car before our rescue group re-connected with her (thanks to her microchip back when we got her vetted).

Mimi is also blissfully unaware that in one month she will lose her foster home (by June 20). All we want is for her to move into a forever home and truly not have a care in the world, other than finding the sunniest spot in the place.

Could you please think of Mimi if you are looking to bring a feline love into your home and spread the word to others you know? Mimi can travel beyond NYC--to CT, MA, etc--for the right home. She'd do best in a home that's quiet and chill like she is, ideally with no young kids or other pets (unless very chill like she is).

Mimi has been a tough case, probably for several reasons, including that she is about 11 years old. (We got her vetted in 2016 (!!) when she was a spry young kitten.) But the way she has blossomed in her foster home makes us so proud. And the fact that the vet declared her in excellent health (blood results included) makes us relieved that Mimi was probably not roughing it outside for long.

We are so eager to find Mimi the loving committed home she deserves!

We rarely post here--hello, last post was April 2021!

Freckles the kitty was a beloved colony cat. One of the caretakers of her colony went above and beyond last week--she noticed that Freckles was lethargic and not eating, so she trapped Freckles and took her to an emergency vet. Very sadly, the diagnosis was not good (kidney failure) and the caretaker had to say good-bye to Freckles.

None of this vet care is cheap, and colony caretakers can go broke. I pitched in to this Go Fund Me, and wanted to share here in case you can too. The money will help the caretaker keep feeding other cats from Freckles colony. The colony cats in this park are near and dear to my heart. I used to be a caretaker too, and it's how I met some of the first cat rescuers in NYC way back in 2015.

Hi friends, it's been a minute and I hope you're doing ok. I just wanted to let you know that Aubrey's Go Fund Me is up and running. We had a technical difficulty with it before, but it's fixed. We are still trying to raise money for this girl who needed surgery and therapy after. (Unfortunately the funds we raised didn't got returned because of the glitch.)

Our rescue efforts have been scaled back because the pandemic has made everything harder. But we are still doing what we can! Aubrey is a darling and we are so happy to have saved her!

Please help sweet Aubrey if you can! We've raised $125 so far and need about $875 more...

About Aubrey, this lovely girl was roughing it at a construction site. Life was tough enough, but Aubrey suffered a serious injury to her front left leg and is unable to use it. Fortunately kind workers wanted to help her and contacted our rescue group. Of course, we swooped in, scooped her up and got her to our vet. We found out Aubrey needs an amputation asap. Her outlook is good if she has the surgery--and she'll be a tripod kitty! Thankfully, the Humane Society will do the surgery at reduced cost, but it'll still be $1000 for the surgery and follow-up care. We understand times are very tough, but any amount you can chip in would be much appreciated! Thanks for reading--and please sweet Aubrey loving vibes!

Hi all, it's been a while since we posted here. I hope you and yours, including your furry family, have all been hanging in there.

I just wanted to share this neat article I read about ways to stimulate your cats. There were some new tips in there for me--such as storing their toys in a catnip container so they "marinate" in all that yummy catnippy goodness!

I'm finding, more now than ever, that playing with my kitties is a great stress reliever. I hope it is for you too!

Hello friends, we hope you and your families are doing OK in this scary and sad time. Last week my rescue partners Todd Rutt and got the awful news that a dear man named Armand who adopted two kittens from us last year died of COVID. We are so sad for his family, friends and the three cats he loved so dearly. We were able to retrieve the cats thanks to help from his family and super and we are now trying to find them new homes. One of the kitties is 14-years-old and will require some medical care, as will one of the (now) 1-year-old cats before they will be ready to be adopted. If you can, please consider pitching in a bit to their Go Fund Me. We will be fostering these cats as long as they need, but we would love to find them loving permanent homes after they have been through so much. Kitt Katt Rescue Harlem
