🎃 Costume season is here! But before you put those adorable costumes on your dog…please desensitize first!!!

Costumes can feel weird for dogs, especially when something is touching your dog’s head, ears, body, or legs.

The good news is that you can teach your dog that costume time = good things!

Here’s where to start 👇

1. Reward interaction:
Don’t start by putting the costume on! Present it and reward ANY interaction: looking at it, sniffing it, nose boops, licking, pawing…it all counts.

2. Give your dog a choice:
Let them move away if they want to. They should be able to opt in and opt out. You can lure them but make sure they ALWAYS have the ability to walk away.

3. Slowly add contact:
Once your dog is comfortable interacting with the costume, start introducing gentle contact. Keep it brief, reward often, and build gradually.

4. Build duration:
If your dog can wear the ears for 2 seconds, you don’t need to immediately ask for 5, then 10, then 20. It’s better to mix it up like 2 seconds, then 5 sec, then back to 2 sec, then 7 sec, etc. Oscillating between easier and harder repetitions keeps your dog from feeling like the criteria are constantly increasing.

5. Watch your dog, not just the costume:
If they’re telling you it’s too much, listen and make the next repetition easier.

Remember, desensitization is about going at your dog’s pace. A few short sessions can do wonders!!!

🎃And now for the fun part…JOIN OUR VIRTUAL FEAR FREE HOWLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A PRIZE! 👻
