Long post ahead… and fair warning, it might get a little mushy.
Sitting here watching my puppies in the whelping box, I can’t help but feel completely in awe of these little lives. Being a breeder is such an emotional experience. Dogs are not livestock out grazing in a pasture…or at least, good breeders don’t treat them that way. They are living beings with both physical and emotional needs, and that understanding starts from the very beginning.
From day one, we spend countless hours in the whelping box. Many of these puppies are quite literally born into our hands. We are the very first human touch they experience. Your breeder helps shape how your puppy will view human interaction for the rest of their life.
After they’re born, we weigh each puppy, monitor them closely, and provide around-the-clock care. They quickly learn our scent, and as they grow, they recognize our voices and faces. As early as two weeks old, they get excited when we approach and find comfort in us. The bond we form with these puppies is something truly special.
We learn each of their quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. We watch them daily, seeing who they are as individuals being to emerge. When a pairing turns out as we had imagined, it’s incredibly rewarding. This is a labor of love. Producing a well-bred dog is a marathon, not a race. But let me tell you, when it all comes together, there’s nothing like that feeling!
This all being said, to our puppy families: when a breeder entrusts you with one of their puppies, please know it’s one of the highest honors we can give. Yes, you are purchasing a puppy, but your breeder is also choosing you.
So when you look at your dog, remember the care and heart that went into raising them. Be proud that your breeder trusted you with a piece of their legacy. Dogs deserve to be well bred, and they deserve wonderful homes, and you are part of that story.
Thank you to everyone who has chosen a puppy from us. We can’t keep them all, but it’s so reward
