Here is a dream setup for success with a reactive dog! These are 5 conditions that lead to Wally CHOOSING to walk away from a trigger! Also, shout out to amazing mom & handler Hannah Kessel

1. Long waist leash - This alllows hands to be free & your leash to be loose. It’s also safer, which is especially helpful when your dog is 90 lbs.
2. Treats! - We have lots of different kinds, keep them high value, and we are generous with them!
3. Marking with a “yes,” when Wally sees his triggers & then turning around before anything escalates, getting in some good reps!
4. Visual Barrier - We use the wall to give a visual break. Wally knows the people are there, can hear & smell them, but the wall gives him a space to relax & recover
5. Distance - We stay at a distance where Wally can be successful, taking away any pressure for him to interact with his triggers.

It’s hot everywhere! Here are two options for staying cool & having fun with your dog featuring adoptable Foxie from Angel City Pit Bulls ACPB
Video 1: Sprinkler for Enrichment! If you have some outdoor space a sprinkler that moves provides a fun game that also keeps your dog cool. You can also add in practicing interruptions and recall if you want to mix in some training.
Video 2: Nosework! Foxie is on level 1, but her incredible foster says Foxie has already mastered finding hidden treats! Nosework is great for working your dog’s nose & brain, while also staying relaxed and focused, which are skills we are working on with this smart high energy girl. We have also incorporated it into walks to encourage sniffing & to create a world that’s more predictable & safe.
Adopter Foxie! She is so sweet, so smart, & so much much!

I loved seeing all the dogs celebrating during The World Cup! The few dogs who feel safe in a crowd came to the bars, while others partied at home! There’s no wrong or right way, as long as your dog feels safe. certifiedseparationanxietytrainer

Cora started off at 3 minutes of being alone before she would start scratching the door & whimpering. It didn’t happen overnight. But now here we are with longer time & quality time alone. We went at Cora’s pace, collected the data, figured out what we can do to set Cora up for success. We are well on our way to achieving our goals . DM me if you would like to both be relaxed when you’re out of the home!

I know. There are no dogs nor talk of behavior in this post, but I can’t stress enough that I think trainers should be students, especially in an area totally unrelated to dogs. It reminds us what it’s like to not know how to do something, allows us to make mistakes, shifts perspectives, builds community & shows that you are much more than a dog trainer. We live in a world where our value is linked to how productive we are & when our job is so much of our identity, it can be a really hard world to live in. Yes, you are a wonderful dog trainer, but you also contain multitudes!
