Many dogs are hardwired to chase birds and other small critters. Some are in it for the “fun” like this little guy who enjoys making pigeons fly 🕊️🕊️🕊️.

Here we are working on an alternate behavior (anything other than chasing but focusing on hanging out and observing while also feeding the birds). Thanks to Lydia DesRoche who shared this protocol. If you’re lucky you’ll spot her in Central Park practicing this with the squirrels and chipmunks!

Over the years i’ve learned my clients appreciate my “less is more” approach- they do not want to be dog trainers and I will lose them over pages of homework and handouts (There are exceptions of course- looking at you Karen Hock ).

This is why creative management is so important. We describe this as preventing the rehearsal of the undesirable behavior. I love this photo and these clients because it’s a great example of effective management. 3 baby gates is inconvenient for sure and not what most people envision aesthetically for their home but they are effective!

We are very excited to welcome our friend Kristina Trank-Donovan to the RTW team. Kristina and I first met and worked together starting back in 2009 when we were dog training apprentices. Since then, Kristina has gone on to great things in NYC and LA. We love her for her big heart and expertise in all things behavior. She’s also a certified separation anxiety trainer (CSAT) so brings that important expertise to the team.

Read more about Kristina here https://raisethewoofnyc.com/meet-the-team/ and reach out if you need in person help on the Upper West Side or need support for Separation Anxiety any where in the world!

What do we do when it’s hot outside and the air pollution is dangerous? PLAY DATES!! We are always chatting with our trainer colleagues finding good matches for our clients for whom a playdate might be advantageous. Puppies- of course, but also shy dogs, nervous dogs, frustrated dogs…the list goes on. Big thanks to NYC Dog Training for collaborating.

A glorious day to celebrate! Happy Pride everyone!
