Neighborhood Cats

Neighborhood Cats Feral cats are too-often forgotten. Our goal is to make life better for community cats locally and throughout the United States. Help us help more cats!

Neighborhood Cats is a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charity. Using the method known as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), our mission is to improve the lives of the millions of cats living on our streets and support the compassionate people caring for them. It's almost here - THE 2026 KITTEN CONFERENCE
https://communitycatscentral.com/events/the-kitten-conference-2026/
Sure, they're small but caring for kittens can be a big job! From building better bottle baby programs to socializing wee ferals for adoption to managing Rabies vaccines for kittens being TNR'd, there's a lot to consider.

Fortunately, these topics - and much more - will be covered in the upcoming 2026 Kitten Conference. Jointly presented by Community Cats Central and the National Kitten Coalition, the online event will kick off on Saturday, June 6 at 10:00 am ET.

Registration for the two-day conference is $75.00 Click the link above to learn more, view the complete schedule and reserve your spot.

June is . As the spring kitten season winds down, many shelters are crowded with little ones. So spread the word and encourage anyone thinking about adopting a cat to make the leap now and go down to the local shelter to find a new friend!

If you have kittens in your colony and you’re wondering what to do, ask yourself:
✔️ Are they young enough (less than 8 weeks old) to easily tame?
✔️ Do you have the time and resources to bring them inside and care for them until you find them homes?
✔️ Is there a rescue partner who can take them in, freeing you up to do TNR and manage your colony?

If it’s not feasible for you to rescue and adopt the kittens, it’s ok to care for them where they are. Just be sure to get Mom (and Dad) fixed ASAP, then spay/neuter the kittens when they’re old enough. Preventing more litters is the name of the TNR game!

Question and answer time with Dr. Lisa!

Dr. Lisa Labrecque is a veterinarian with more than 20 years of experience working in animal welfare, including with community cats. She’s partnered with Neighborhood Cats to offer advice and answer questions.

Question of the day: What is the recommended holding time for cats following spay/neuter surgery?

Dr. Lisa: “The answer depends on several factors, but for routine surgery in a healthy cat, 24 hours is usually sufficient. Once the cat has fully recovered from anesthesia, is eating, and urinating normally, it is okay to release.”

Pregnant or nursing cats have other considerations, though. Read Dr. Lisa’s full response and other helpful advice here: https://www.neighborhoodcats.org/dr-lisa

What do you do when that last hard-to-catch cat just won’t take the bait?

There’s always that one in the colony who’s either too wily or too timid to cooperate. But 100% sterilization rates are vital to the success of Trap-Neuter-Return.

Here are a few of our tried and true techniques for hard-to-catch cats.

1️⃣ Use drop traps, which cats are usually less fearful of than normal traps.

2️⃣ Employ trap training, where you move food closer and closer to the trap until it’s inside.

3️⃣ Outfit your trap with a clear rear door so they think there’s a way out.

4️⃣ Disguise the trap within a box or foliage.

5️⃣ Hide the trip plate so they can’t avoid it.

6️⃣ Lure them indoors where there’s no way out.

🪤 Drop traps can be a lifesaver in a variety of trapping situations. But it takes a little skill and know-how to use them correctly!

Join us for a special workshop led by the team at Neighborhood Cats, co-designers of the first commercially available drop trap.

This workshop is ideal for beginners who’ve never used a drop trap, or for experienced drop-trappers who want to expand their skill set. By combining instruction, real-world examples, video and advanced tips, we’ll show you how to use drop traps safely, effectively, and creatively.
