What's the hottest topic around the Reclaimed Organics' water cooler? Contamination!

When you see plastic bags/service gloves/salad lids, or soda cans, or non-BPI certified coffee cups in the compost bin, that's contamination. It's the stuff that won't break down in a thermophilic environment, or if it does, it leaves behind PFAS {'forever chemicals'}. And it's the stuff that wreaks havoc in the composting process because a person or a machine has to remove it.

What can you do to ameliorate contamination? A poem:

When you pass by your bin,
take peek in
and look for those things that aren't groovy.
If something's not right,
don't tremble with fright ~
Be brave, reach in and remove it!

Please meet ’s Zero Waste Consultant ~ Rachana Shah! Joining us in October 2021, Rachana has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of Portfolio Management, bringing her wealth of knowledge to Zero Waste program design and implementation, while also supervising waste audits, delivering Lunch & Learn presentations and developing educational programming covering CGC's wide range of Waste in the Community webinars.
In her own words:
"I've always had a deep curiosity of why people litter or waste, especially as the child of immigrants who didn't waste a single thing (especially when it came to food!). Helping better the many climate injustices, specifically in the waste space, also is a huge motivator. I will never forget the waste pickers I worked with in India--who were Untouchables, the lowest caste in India--who worked so hard and with dignity to try and provide for their families while doing an incredible service to their country and our environment. I'm inspired by the growing awareness of both food waste and plastic pollution in the United States, and am hopeful we can all come together to make common sense changes to not only our individual behaviors, but to the structures we have in place in order to extract as much value from waste as possible!"
Thank you, Rachana!

ID: A woman of color standing against a red brick wall gazes into the distance to the left of the drame. She is wearing a black t-shirt with the words "don't be trash" emblazoned across the front. She has her long dark hard in a braid that falls to the left of her face, over her shoulder. She is wearing a short necklace of three neon strands that fall around the color of her shirt and a longer chain necklace with a turquoise colored metal patterned plate at the center, falling just below the word "trash".

What is a waste audit? After business hours, in loading docks of office buildings around NYC, our team of Waste Audit Helpers carefully pulls apart bagged waste, sorts it into 16 different waste streams, weighs each stream and then generates an incredibly detailed report of the building's waste profile, based on the data collected. Building managers and owners can then make highly informed decisions about how to move forward with enhanced zero waste strategies and right-sized waste management services. Waste Audits are included in ’s Zero Waste Consulting Division suite of services.

ID: 5 adult people are standing along the sides of a standard folding table, 3 on one side, 2 on the other side. The table itself is wrapped in a clear, plastic table cloth and has several bags of waste on top of it. The waste is being gone through and carefully sorted by the people standing at the table - you can see that people are emptying small condiment cups into larger cups to be sorted into their different types - organics and plastic. Every person at the table is wearing a black apron and a face mask. The background appears to be either a basement space or loading dock with a painted brick wall and dark floor.

It's July! Which means it's Plastic Free July! What are some of the ways you've chosen to reduce your single-use plastic waste? Visit PlasticFreeJuly.org for ways you can take part and how you can help spread the word!

ID: An image provided by PlasticFreeJuly.org. There are two illustrated people in the middle center of the image, holding up a sign that says, "Yes, I'll choose to refuse single use plastics." THe background of the graphic is light blue, and there are images of reusable waterbottles, grocery bags, and face masks on either side of the people. The words, "Together. 100+ million people are creating a world without plastic waste" in the center top of the image. The illustrated people have brown skin and have been given smiles - one of them is making a thumbs up sign and they are "facing" the "camera".

This month, we celebrate as our June Awesome Composter! Since May of 2021, these avid composters have diverted over 2300 pounds of food scraps from landfills ~ that's an average of 175 pounds per month! And every one of their awe inspiring array of baked delicacies is delicious {the buckwheat chocolate croissant is a personal fave}. As an active member the of Lower East Side community, PartyBus Bakeshop also hosts a number of CSA pickups throughout the growing season. Thank you all for composting!

There are two Reclaimed Organics food scrap collection buckets visible, one on the counter to the right of the people and one on the ground just under the other.

At the foot of the sculpture "Group of Four Trees" by Jean Debuffet, CGC's Zero Waste Educator staffed three waste streams during last week's ADNY Dine Around Downtown event. Attendance and diversion both exceeded expectations and the weather was perfect. Thanks again to our excellent team for making this event spectacular!

These trikes haul food scraps! Mike (on a compost pickup route) and Gwen (on an equipment delivery route) had a chance meet-up in Midtown recently and asked a curious passer-by to snap a photo. It's always a fun coincidence bumping into a fellow hauler in this City of 8.5 million people.
