Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts

Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts This page was created by Manhattan NYCACC volunteers to celebrate the love we share for the MACC cats. We hope it helps them find loving homes.

As volunteers and fosters, we hope to bring our experiences with the cats at Animal Care Centers of NYC to those who may want to adopt, foster, or rescue them. These are personal stories shared from our time spent with the cats. We are not experts or professionals in cat behavior. We are cat lovers that dedicate our time to caring for stray and abandoned cats needing homes. We fall in love every d

ay. We care about the cats, we dote on them, we worry about them. We welcome you to join us in helping them to find their forever homes. To Adopt a Cat from NYCACC

Not a senior this time but a five year old spayed gal I met at the shelter when she was only 6 month old, a fiery, fun and playful little gal. Here she is againfor much worsening allergies in the owner who told us that Lulu is a very sweet and affectionate kitty who loves to play. She enjoys brushing and being carried. She would be friendly to strangers and children but never mingled with dogs or cats.
Lulu(110052) is a most lovely cat who is located in our interaction room as she is big-17 pounds. She is very sweet, low key, loves to stay next to her visitor, play and yes, eats some treats but eating is not her focus at all. She is a truly feel good cat, a relaxing cat that makes your forget...the chaos around us. She is a level2(a little uncomfortable with pick up(let's not forget she is an overwt cat!) and a little shy in her first 2-3 days at the care center. Besides being overwt, she was considered healthy by the medical team(by the way she was nice with the docs and upon intake with the staff).

Nana(3260610) is a 16 year old dame we have the honor to host as her owner was taken into care. Nana is a real treat, so pretty and girly in her little grey dress, so friendly and welcoming(even with the veterinary team) when one opens her kennel door. She immediately comes down her balcony, slowly and lady-like and indulges with lots of petting and gentle talks. The kind of cat one does not want to leave! Nana is underweight,(less than 4.5 lbs) matted and has senior teeth...We are waiting for her labs that partially and surprisingly came back as normal for her age. She does have some crystaluria and early CKD(she is 16!!). Nana aced her behavior evaluation, no surprise, of course...No pet belongs to a cage and a senior even less as like babes, they are very fragile. She already has URI!! and hopefully she will continue to eat! A home sweet home is what Nana needs and what we dream for her.

Genevieve #257993 has been very dear to me since his arrival at the care center with 8 of his friends, all jammed in a crate, dirty, skinny and in need of TLC. He was very fearful but overtime, he has learned to trust more and more. We have two sessions each time I am at the shelter and our bond is stronger and stronger. By his looks, he is related to Purrfect and Eloise who went to rescue.
A volunteer writes:
Police were alerted by a Good Samaritan about a dog crate containing nine cats sitting in a big mess...Young cats, middle aged cats and one oldie, Genevieve. Genevieve is an all ebony gentleman who like most of his housemates is shy, underweight, a bit shabby and in need of TLC. All his friends have been rescued or adopted and Genevieve is still waiting for his forever. Genevieve has made great progress. True, he still likes to stay in his cubby, his safe place but his feelings toward us have changed for the better. Trust settled in and Genevieve now comes forward for petting, leaning into pets and rubbing his head against my hand. He is really a sweet eleven year old gent who soooo deserves a home and a family, a safe, permanent and loving place where he can finally feel cared for and happy. I enjoy every bit of my time spent with Genevieve. Since June 26 when he first arrived at the care center, I have grown to really enjoy and love this sweet cat who took a while to show his true and gentle personality. I hope a quiet, loving and comfortable home materializes soon for sweet Genevieve!
He so enjoys his new bed. He did not use to care before.....

Mr THOMAS MITTENS:256422-blood in the urine, struvite crystals. Lived with many cats, kids and dogs.
A volunteer writes:
Mr Thomas Mittens came to the Manhattan Care Center with a bunch of other cats as their home counted too many pets. Although apparently healthy, Mr Thomas Mittens was found to have blood and crystals in his urine for which he is on a special diet to prevent any urinary blockage, a not so uncommon medical condition in male cats. He is feeling quite well now and is a real great cat to spent time with. He loves to eat(even his special diet) and to play with lots of good energy(see his video-his family says that he could play rough or gently) and he does not mind at all to come on the lap without complaining too much when he is put back in his kennel...Petting is up his alley too and he bakes tons of biscuits! Young Mr Thomas Mittens is a very pleasant kitty who likely would do better with experienced cat parents who enjoy an active cat and are willing to keep him on his special diet and with appropriate veterinary follow up. Mr Thomas Mittens is waiting for his new family at the Manhattan Care Center!

PORTIA: #259970-H/O bladder stones-2 yo SF.
A volunteer writes:
Portia is the prettiest sight, an all ebony, fluffy and plushy kitty who looks more like a pricy stuffed toy than a real cat..Portia IS a real cat, though and a very sweet and friendly one. She is really a pleasure for the eyes(and the hand as her coat is sooo soft) and a lovely kitty to spend time with. Her former owner describes her as a quiet, gentle, sweet and loving pet. So, why is Portia at the Manhattan Care Center? Few months ago, Portia developed bladder stones(she had crystals in her urine) and started voiding outside her litter box. Her family could not afford her general and medical care anymore and Portia was brought to the care center where she is observed and doing well without presently any urinary symptoms or litter box issues. She needs to be on a special diet to prevent more stones formation and that should be discussed with our adoption counselors. Portia is a delight of a cat. True, she does have a medical issue but many cats or dogs do. Like anyone, she deserves a good and loving home. Come and meet lovely Portia at the Manhattan Care Center!

Another senior: RUFFIN #257489, 10 year old neutered male who came in with his friend TEENY #257490 as their elderly owner was displaced. They came in without any owner surrender profile for us to know more about their prior life. Ruffin is in our community room, likes to sleep and eat but is right away available when a visitor opens his door. He likes to stay around his guest and even kisses. He does have his moments of wariness with sudden movements and noises. Level1*-No labs done-severe PDZZ(dental disease)
A volunteer writes:
Ten year old Ruffin came with friend Teeny(8 year old neutered male)) as their elderly owner was displaced. Ruffin was wary when he first arrived at the care center. His pet parent, his brother, his home...all gone! We understand. It did not take long though for Ruffin, a good and smart cat, to understand that we wanted the best for him. He is such a sweetheart too! He was already a gentle soul when I made his first video but now that he is in our big playroom, he is a much happier camper. Ruffin is a sweet looking tiger with saucer eyes who dreams to be home again, loving and being loved. He aced his behavior evaluation and is already neutered. Come and meet Ruffin very soon at the Manhattan Care Center.w more about their prior life.

Teeny #257490 has been hit harder "psychologically". He is a big boy at 22lbs and quite fearful although he is showing signs that he could may be go to adoptions(accepting Delectables on a spoon and some petting on the head but still with a low growl). I know we do not know anything about his past but I bet that in a home and may be with his friend Ruffin, his heart would beat much more lightly and happily. Teeny is pictured in the last bottom right sided photo.

DEXTER #258457 says:"I am still there waiting for you...." he has a mild cold right now unfortunately. He is 9 year old and neutered. The owner became incapable to care for his cats because of health and personal issues. Dexter is really a gem of a cat, so easy going and a level1. His main issue is the one of many senior cats:senior teeth...

Another senior. This one is at risk. THEODORE:259391-10 year old intact male who arrived at the care center 7/10/26. 11 lbs.

A volunteer writes:
Senior Theodore was brought to us as his owner became unable to take care of his pets for quite a while and and was taken into care. A nice person was feeding all these cats, even placed them but Theodore kept in hiding, not willing to leave his home. No wonder he was in shock when he arrived at the care center. His lovely nature, though has surfaced and sweet Theodore leans now into pets, purrs and makes lots of biscuits(see his video). He is a very endearing, loving and lovable gentlecat! Theodore does have a host of medical issues. Among them are his very senior teeth, a heart murmur with a stressed myocardium(proBNP of 1030) and chronic kidney disease(IRIS stage 2/4-SDMA 27) for which he is on a special diet(he is not a fan of it). My heart goes to Theodore who has still a lot of love and gentle companionship to give to the new owner who will give him the chance to feel safe, well cared for and loved. If you are that wonderful person, Theodore(and us) would be blessed to have you meet him at the Manhattan Care Center!
He is presently not eating except high value foods(he eats churru). No URI yet but most cats will get it and this would not be good at all for Theodore.

10 year old Hanifa #255745 has been at the care center since the end of May. He arrived with his 14 year old mom, Tutu as their owner passed away. Hanifa was the sweetest little guy. He was very cute too. He was quiet and gentle and took his time to show how much love he had in him. His mother was rescued. He was left behind may be because of his heart condition. Hanifa and 2 other cats were the highlights of my visits to the shelter, a moment of peace, of love shared. I am really heartbroken that he had no strength anymore in him to face the life in a cage. When I asked for him to go to Medical on Sunday, I knew he would not make it. He was letting go of this world and everything and everyone in it. I spent some time with him at the end of the day, yesterday. I knew it was the last time I would see him. Rest in peace, little guy, I really loved you like you were my pet...
We have soo many seniors right now and not at MACC only. Can more be done for them? Like neonates, seniors are fragile and most often do not do well in shelters. They get depressed, stop eating, loose weight and it is the beginning of the end. We need more help with this population...
