Two new seniors at the MACC...12 year old neutered NOUGAT(268160) and his all ebony lady, 10 year old spayed Marzipan(268161). Their owner was taken into care. Nougat is diabetic on Insulin(no ketones). Marzipan is apparently healthy. Both of them are really sweet. Marzipan is a little bit shy compared to Nougat but both are really nice cats to spend time with. Both have very good behavior evaluation. I will habe more info later. Just wanted to post them as soon as possible.

One of our many seniors at the Manhattan Care Center: BENICIO:30586-16 year old neutered male-His owner passed away.
A volunteer writes:
Love at first sight! Benicio is a cute Tabby, a super senior who is with us as sadly, his owner passed away. I met him the day after his arrival at the care center. He was not in hiding but at his door, wondering why he could not get out. He was eager to meet and greet, me, his visitor, immediately leaned into pets, head bunted my hand and even purred. Clearly, friendly and social Benicio knows his way around people. He must have been very much loved by his former owner. Benicio was found to be hyperthyroid, a condition usually easily treated with Methimazole. He has senior teeth but lets not forget that he is sixteen year old! Benicio is already neutered and could go home today after his behavior evaluation(he is a Level2 as he was a bit shy for the evaluator). Home is were he always belonged and lets make sure that he spends the rest of his life well cared for, safe and loved with a new owner or family. Benicio is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center!
Although not sick yet with a cold, Benicio did not look happy yesterday. I would say that although still sweet and friendly, he looked pretty sad and even a bit subdued. I am worried about him. Homes are not easy to find and even less for seniors who are almost 100% passed by ...Some get adopted, though and we all value tremendously these amazing adopters! Let's hope that Benicio gets out before he gets too sick.

I am reposting a senior cat everybody loves at the care center. She is extremely social. easy going, sweet, loving and the best lap cat! She does not look or act her stated age. PRINCESS:69189 has been here almost 3 months. She comes from a house counting kids(no idea how many), many cats(being surrendered regularly to the care center as the owner has too many-they keep multiplying)) and dogs. Princess is said to be highly affectionate but would not like cats and dogs. She does not have any bite hx, though. She was not cat tested at the shelter as it is not done usually but I truly would love to see that done. Princess keeps a good spirit despite being for such a long time at the shelter. Never ever was she cranky or hissy or swatty. She is truly a feel good cat who could provide lots of moral support to a person. She would have exocrine pancreas insufficiency (not supported by a special test done at the shelter(see side comment, though) and is fed regular food mixed with Pancreazyme powder. She is not fond of her food. It looks like there is no other future for her than a cage at MACC. Could there be out there a person who yearns for a cat full of love, well mannered but does not like other pets . Yes, she needs a med sprinkled in her food twice a day but does she even needs it? It is not even that expensive... I wonder?? Also, not everybody wants more than a pet. I do not think it is impossible to find that person or is it? PRINCESS might not be on the EPL but she needs help too!!

I really like this little guy who has been at the Manhattan Care Center since 7/29 and seems to go nowhere..... 4 year old WALTON(261068) was found in the street in a broken mesh carrier and brought by a GS to the care center. He was a a bit fearful at the beginning of his stay but is now the most friendly and sweetest guy on earth. So, why is he still at the shelter? Well he had 2 witnessed seizure like episodes after waking up from sedation(one sedation for diagnostic purpose and the other one for his neuter). He might have had another episode while in the adoption ward. He nevr was given any treatment for the issue and there seems to be some cloud @ the nature of the episodes. This makes poor Walton basically non adoptable and he just waits for nada in a cage although he has a great attitude and happy personality until now. It is pretty sad to see such a lovely guy sitting duck in a cage....He is a true lap cat!!!! Level29to me he really is a Level10-9.5 lbs-FIV/FeLV negative. Nl labs. Nl neurological examination.

Five cats in a dog crate were found in the street and brought by the police to the Manhattan Care Center on 9/18. The four young ones have been adopted ASAP as they were just almost perfect but my friend MEGASTAR(265792), a super sweetheart and eight years of age is still here and in isolation for a cold. his appetite is still great, though. He is such a friendly and welcoming guy who soo enjoys petting and company. Not in the same shape as his young counterparts. Rough and matted coat(he was shaved) and bad teeth. He was scheduled for a neuter and mouth examination and eventually dental care but he got sick. I hope the shelter will still do on him what they had planned.

Megastar came to us with four young friends, all of them affectionate, just like him. They were locked in a crate, in the street and brought by a Good Samaritan to the care center. Megastar is a middle aged gentlecat I fell in love with the minute I spotted him laying on top of his kuranda bed. He came down right away as I talked to him and immediately leaned into pets, head bunted my hand and purrs. Super friendly, social and mighty hungry too. Megastar is like his housemates on the thin side and a bit matted(he was shaved at the shelter). He did of course very well on his behavior evaluation, does have an decent senior blood panel and is scheduled yto have some dental work at the time of his neuter when his cold will be over. Megastar is really a sweet and endearing kitty who will most likely make a wonderful four legged best friend for years to come. Ask to meet him when you visit us at the Manhattan Care Center! He is a LEVEL1.

Fourteen is quite a late age for a pet to be surrendered to a shelter. Senior Splatch(262688) is said to be a friendly, energetic and playful cat but this is not the side he is showing us since his arrival at the care center. Splatch is not really in hiding but seems to have lost his pep and now, he got a cold to make things worse. Splatch does not swat or hiss. He eats the treats offered, accepts petting, does not try to flee or avoid us but does not engage with us. His world fell apart and he does not know how to react to the situation. He might need a little bit more time but the best remedy for his mental and physical health is ...a Home Sweet Home with an adopter who loves and knows how to care for seniors. Could you be this very special person? Splotch is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center!
Update 9/26/26: Splatch is really a sweet and super cute elderly gentleman.He might not be super active as his former owner describes him but he is a very gentle soul who always welcomes visitors with the softest manners, making little biscuits and slowly leaning into pets. Splatch needs a home, not a cage. He has still so much love to give. Please, consider him if you have it in you to care and love a senior pet! Level2* as shy. 12lbs-moderate dental disease-no labs done. uses his litter box.
His gorgeous orange 10yoSF housemate was rescued quickly. She was not"having it" at the shelter and was a level4* cat.

BASIL-260047 is the cutest little gal, 2 year old and spayed. She was part of an eviction group of cats, all adopted in July 2026, included Basil. She was returned 3 weeks later, anorectic, with bloody diarrhea and having lost 1.5lbs. She also had a bad URI. She got better and was readopted only to be returned few days later, not eating well and wobbly. A nystagmus appeared too and anisocoria. She was treated with keppra, clinda and progressively got better with no real diagnosis. She is now totally asymptomatic and off meds. She looks perfectly healthy, lively and the sweetest and most lively little gal on earth. A history like this makes her difficult to adopt by members of the public although , of course, you never know...Like people, animals in shelters drag their past like the dirt on our shoes. She is adorable and so patient and resilient.

A little girl, only 10 month old and she is in trouble:SNICKERS: 259669.

Ten month old Snickers is one of our special needs kitties. She is thought to have "feline hyperesthesia syndrome" and is currently on GABA and Fluoxetin. Two months ago, Snickers was found abandoned in front of a very large building complex( she was roaming the area for weeks), underweight and weak. A Good Samaritan brought her in July to the care center where she regained strength. I remember her being a sweet older kitten(see initial video) but a bit skittish and fearful. She already experienced back in July some yowling episodes and tail chasing fits. She went home with an experienced adopter but her "episodes" possibly connected with yet another change in her life, continued and Snickers was brought back to the Manhattan Care Center as a DOH cat with multiple scratching incidents. She is still a sweet girl who is social and likes petting but the stress of shelter life is not good for her. Snickers needs an experienced and patient new owner able to give Snickers a quiet and stable environment while working with a veterinarian to adjust her medications to her symptoms. I really think that Snickers is worth the attention and the work someone might consider putting into her. Snickers would love to meet you!
Of note, the GABA was being tapered down as she was doing much better on Fluoxetin but the episodes got more frequent again and her GABA is being upped. She is really sweet, attention seeking, loving petting but she is fearful too. I remember a little kid having a fit in the room, she got scared and escaped my hold. I was able to pick her up and bring her back to her kennel without issue. Snickers is on the ARL. She really does not belong to a cage.

An amazing cat I fell in love with the first day I saw him...SALVADOR:262069, a 2 year old now neutered gent seen being kicked by a bunch of lovely kids while he was in a box....He was brought to the MACC in pain and with some elimination troubles. His sc***um was hurt too. Salvador has been a model patient from day one and he is very much loved by everybody in the medical room. The good thing, he still had a**l tone upon arrival and pain. He recovered his urine and bowel functions 100% after a few days. Still his tail had been hurt and he had what is called a tail pull with the tail hanging miserably behind him. After one month, Salvador was taken outside for surgery:a tail amputation that hopefully would preserve his elimination functions. And IT DID! Salvador is a GREAT patient, not bothering his surgery site, compliant with whatever is asked from him. He is no couch potato but a lively and very sweet young man.Salvador is nor a Ginger Bobcat. Hair still need to grow back on the stump. He needs a home sweet home. Salvador will be the most wonderful cat to have home!
