It's that time of year! Back to school is exciting, but also chaotic. Routines change and pets can get upset and overwhelmed. Here are a few simple tools to help make the transition easier for the furry family members.

Spend quality time with your pet
-Extend play sessions and walks before and after leaving for school. It not only tires your pet, but gives a positive association to the new routine.

Introduce gradual separation
-A week to ten days prior to going back to school, begin to ease your pet into the new school routine and get them used to things being different. This first day of school will most likely be a bit chaotic and if everyone is familiar with the routine already there is less stress and pets are less likely to be overwhelmed.

Create a safe/comfortable space for them
-Make beds and crates comfy and inviting. Establish a designated space if they don’t already have one.

Establish a routine for school days and weekends
-Pets love a routine! It makes them feel safe and happy when things are predictable. Try to make a daily routine that is easy for pets, kids and parents and stick to it.

Engage your pet in mental and physical stimulation
-Consider providing enrichment toys for your pets to concentrate on while your gone. Play mentally stimulating games with them to drain mental energy and relax them. Don’t cut walks!

Leave scented clothing
-Pets miss their humans when they are gone. Leave behind bedding or clothes that have scent to comfort them.

Monitor separation anxiety
-Consider a pet cam to watch for signs of stress or destructive behavior. If a cam isn’t possible, have neighbors or a pet sitter check in to make sure pets aren’t under stress.

Heatstroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can affect cats and dogs, especially during the hot summer months. It occurs when an animal's body is unable to regulate its internal temperature, leading to a dangerous rise in core body temperature. Heatstroke can cause organ damage, neurological issues, and even death if not recognized and treated promptly. Heatstroke can occur very quickly and potentially result in death in under an hour, especially if the pet does not have access to shade, water, and rest.

It is important to be aware of the signs of heatstroke in pets. Heatstroke is an emergency situation that can be life-threatening for pets. Pet parents should contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect their pet is experiencing heatstroke. Prompt medical attention is critical.

It's still summer folks! Please take extreme caution with your pets in this hot, humid weather. Keep walks short and try to stay out of the hottest portion of the day if at all possible. Be especially vigilant with puppies, older pets, pets with chronic disease & flat faced breeds. They are all quite vulnerable to these miserable temps.

If you do notice any issues with over heating, please get your pet some place cool ASAP. If your pet has rapid panting, rapid heartbeat or shows any sign of collapse please rush them to the The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center ER.
