Just wanted to spotlight one of our long time pups Frankie! She struggles with aggression, and is highly reactive towards dogs, cats, skateboards, trucks, and people. She’s very smart, and when there’s no distraction, she is actually more obedient with commands than a lot of other dogs. For walks (not training), we usually try to avoid any potential triggers. Though, this video is a great example of us practicing a little bit of obedience near the threshold of what she can handle. If we were any closer to the two Frenchies, she may not be able to keep it together. This gray area is such a delicate and important threshold to practice with. We want to set them up for success, while not avoiding the issues.
Good job Frankie!

Sometimes when handling dogs, we re-create sensations rooted in primal behavior. This insight allows us to communicate in a language they intuitively understand. From how we correct to how we praise. This is just one example.
Can you think of other examples of this?

Last clip of Archie walking home. He passed delicious street q-tips, sat when hearing the command once, and immediately listened when corrected for rushing past me going up the stairs. GOOD BOY ARCHIE!

In this clip, I’m using ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ reinforcement. In this context, positive and negative does not mean good and bad but adding and subtracting. Low level directional leash pressure is applied and then taken away the moment the down position is achieved. It’s marked and followed with a positive reinforcer (treats/praise). She learns that going in a down position results in the subtraction of leash pressure and addition of reward. Both of these reinforcers make it more likely for her to willingly choose the down position. Overtime, less directional leash pressure is needed, and if you’ll notice, the last repetition actually had no pressure. This is how we transition to just using a verbal cue.

Good job Chloe!!

Continuing our walk with Archie. When I had him sit, he heard a truck go through the slush and the sound startled him. You could see him wanting to jump up, but he stayed in his sit. This showed great self-control. I released him from the sit and we went right back into heel.

Working Chloe’s ‘PLACE’ command. This clip shows her understanding the verbal command without leash guidance or a physical cue. Good job Chloe!

Ever wonder why we let little dogs do things we’d never let big dogs do? And why there’s so many more small dogs with bite histories? They don’t know they’re big or small. It’s all the same behavior. Let’s train our little dogs the same way as you may train a 100lb Rottweiler!!

Patterning ‘CRATE’ into the feeding routine for our board and train last week. Using this positive reinforcement method had her practically begging to be crated. We’ll be sharing more from her stay.

Teaching Max ‘PLACE’ for the very first time! This is such a useful skill to teach all dogs. (if you know, you know).
Just imagine, the doorbell rings, your dog is alerted, they defer to you, and you send them to their bed where they stay while you answer the door.
You may think that’s wishful thinking, but exactly that’s why we start the teaching process with no distractions. Once they understand what is being asked of them, and get used to the exercise, you can slowly introduce controlled distractions.
I am using a treat to lure, as well as very low level leash pressure simply to give him directional information. When the last paw gets on the place, any leash tension is immediately loosened and I give a positive marker (‘YES’), followed by (not at the same time as) a reward.
There are nuances and often some troubleshooting involved, so feel free to message us for a more detailed step-by-step. Again, such a useful skill to develop. I highly recommend taking time to work on this.
GOOD LUCK!!🐾🐾❤️

When you let highly anxious dogs lead without clear guidance, you are just setting them up for failure.
We feel sorry for them and don’t want to be ‘mean’ or ‘re-traumatize’ them, etc.. I get it, and can totally empathize, but consider that we may actually be doing them a disservice by reinforcing fear inducing behavior through allowance. This deepens the roots of their neurotic habits and can block them from having the chance to overcome it.

I’m not suggesting to punish in an overly harsh manner, but it’s our responsibility as good owners to give our dogs clear feedback.

So in this clip you’ll notice leash pressure turning on and off at specific times. The dog gets a wave of anxiety coming from the depths of who knows where, and begins to pull erratically. Immediately, the walk stops and leash pressure turns on. When they get into the desired ‘heel’ position, the pressure turns off and the walk resumes. The longer we walk loose leash, the more they can experience the truly relaxing and balancing energy walks provide for dogs. If I really wanted to be force free, I’d lose the leash completely and let the dog run free (right into traffic lol). Anyway, food for thought. Let’s talk about it.
