Our friend PJ wants us to tell you that September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! PJ is doing very well at 17 years old ♡♡♡ his dad makes sure he is very comfortable.

Do you know how to recognize pain in your pet?
Pain isn't just limping or whining. Most pets don't make noise to alert us of discomfort, or even stop wagging their tails or purring, especially if their pain is chronic.

Pain could look like being less active, having a decreased appetite, difficulty using stairs, or licking areas on their bodies such as their joints.

We have so many options for pain relief in pets, including daily medications, supplements, injections, and laser therapy .

Especially if your pet is older, learn the signs of discomfort in pets ♡

We got a laser! 😎 We're so excited to offer laser therapy to our patients. It makes a huge difference in dogs with chronic pain and arthritis, wound healing, and lots more.

Our first laser patient was Judge! She tore her ACL recently and needed to get a knee surgery (something called a TPLO). To help her healing post-op she put her safety "doggles" on and let us perform laser therapy. She was a great patient ♡

If you have a pet with chronic pain, arthritis, an injury, or anything else that could benefit from laser therapy, give us a call and set up an appointment!

This is Lola! Lola got herself in trouble a few weeks ago when she found herself a dangerous toy inside a cabinet - sewing thread. Her family didn't see her sneak the thread from the sewing supplies, but they realized something was wrong once she started vomiting. They brought her in and we were able to see part of the thread under her tongue. When she swallowed it, it wrapped itself under her tongue and extended all the way down through her small intestines. We took x-rays to look at her intestines, and very quickly went to surgery to save her life!
The thread measured at 25 inches and went all the way from her mouth through the entire small intestine. It required a few enterotomies (surgical openings of the small intestine) to cut it into smaller pieces and remove it. It was a tough surgery but she was a trooper and did great.

This is a very common foreign material for cats to ingest The barbs on their tongue make it impossible for cats to just spit out a thread and they instead have to swallow it. The string causes the intestines to plicate- meaning they bunch up around the string. You can see this on her x-ray, all of that bunched up intestine is not normal, and becomes very painful. This creates a life threatening situation very quickly! Dr. Lepkowski performed her surgery and she went home a few days later. We are so grateful that she recovered well ♡

Lola and the staff at Animal House encourage everybody to make sure to keep any kind of strings safely away from their kitties 😸

Happy 4th of July everyone! We hope you have a great holiday 🎆
We will be closed Saturday July 4th and resume normal hours on Monday July 6th.
Keep your pets safe and happy by protecting them from hot pavement/sidewalks, high temperatures, and loud noises. We recommend pets stay indoors with fresh water, air conditioning, and some background TV or radio noise to distract from fireworks. Very nervous pets should not be left alone as they could injure themselves if they panic.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend from everyone at Animal House ♡
