During June and July, Community Food Educators Keesha and Anna hosted seasonal food demos to bring fresh recipes, using in-season produce, to local patrons!

Chef Keesha made delicious corn fritters with herby sauces and two tangy summer slaws using fennel, papalo, parsley, and cabbage from our Urban Farm. Anna made tasty orzo salad and summer tostadas. Thanks to those who joined us for Salt Marsh Saturday and Cooking on the Farm today!🦀🥬

This morning, visitors at the Little Hell Gate Salt Marsh learned about some of the amazing creatures that call the marsh home, including fiddler crabs, mummichog, egrets, and blue crabs. They even explored the paths into the marsh! Later, Chef Umair led a great Cooking on the Farm workshop using produce harvested this morning. Participants made sauces out of in-season ingredients like chard, rosemary, tomatoes, garlic, papalo, and so much more.

We hope to see you back at the park next weekend for Yoga and Dance in the Park, a Food Demo on the Urban Farm with Chef Keesha, and the afternoon event of our Catch & Release Fishing Series.

Our weekly dance program courtesy of Sweet Water Dance & Yoga is one of our most beloved experiences we offer our neighboring communities here at Randall’s Island Park!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be offering bachata and soca dance lessons every Saturday morning from 11-1145AM at the East River Picnic Area.

The bachata is a social dance that was created in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. It has its roots in the working class as it was initially rejected by the upper class, and it acts as a bridge of nostalgia and identity for Dominican immigrants all over the world.

Soca was created in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1970s and much like bachata, it also has its roots with the working class and connects Caribbean islanders living all over the globe.

Come out to the Park this summer to learn more about these dances and fine tune your dancing skills with the beautiful city skyline in front of you.
