Seven months with this stubborn little tank wasnโ€™t nearly enough. Huxley had been dealing with ear infections and allergy flare-ups, and his last vet visit found a fungal rash on his belly. We got all his medication and he cleared up. Pretty soon he was back to planting himself wherever he wanted, snorting like a freight train and dramatically grunting whenever Camille tried moving him. Half the time heโ€™d stumble getting off the couch and then look offended about it. We were supposed to take him back two weeks later, but that was the weekend my wife Camille and I unexpectedly became foster parents.

Last Sunday he went downhill overnight. Even feeling terrible, Huxley stubbornly stayed beside Camille until she held him. He passed in her arms. Afterward the vet said theyโ€™d suspected tumors at his previous visit. I never knew. If I had, I wouldโ€™ve pushed harder. I keep thinking I let him down.
