Yesterday’s tiny improvement had me thinking my dog might come home. Today I lost Mabel. Yesterday she lifted her nose toward my hand and gave a little whine, still checking who was there. I let myself hope. Then today she got worse and struggled to breathe. The vet found fluid in her lungs and belly. She was severely anemic, and her white blood cell count and liver enzymes were high.
We tried everything we could, but she couldn’t recover. I keep wondering whether there was anything else I could have done. I wanted more time with her. Rest easy, Mabel. You mattered to me, you were loved, and I won’t forget you.

Yesterday my dog was still trying to disappear under her blanket. Today she’s gone. Dottie showed a little improvement yesterday and nudged her nose deeper into the folds, giving a tiny muffled bark when I spoke. That little bit of her usual attitude made me hope. Then today she got worse and struggled to breathe. The vet found fluid in her lungs and belly. She was severely anemic, and her white blood cell count and liver enzymes were high.
